Urban New York Trip Leader Application

Position Description

Urban New York trip leaders (TLs) will work under the supervision of Assistant Director of Student Engagement Nina Lam. Trip leaders are volunteer-based positions, and all applicants must be in good academic and judicial standing. The positions are open to all undergraduate students in Columbia College (CC) or Columbia Engineering (SEAS) who are incoming sophomores, juniors or seniors for the 202324 academic year. Incoming first-year students are ineligible to apply; students in other undergraduate schools are also ineligible. TLs will assist and support with the planning and implementation of Urban NY. They are also responsible for the communication between winners, those on the waitlist, and faculty/staff attendees of each trip. TLs will advertise and promote the various lotteries and lead one to four trips a semester. In addition, they will assist in strengthening the program and support their fellow TLs in becoming a strong and cohesive team.

Responsibilities and Expectations

  • Trainings

    • Attend and participate in the Urban New York trip leader trainings at the beginning of each semester (dates subject to change)
      • Fall 2023 Orientation and Training: Date to be determined, early September
      • Spring 2024 Semester Orientation and Training: Date to be determined
    • Attend all the required team meetings
  • General Duties
    • Attend staff meetings and meet all deadlines for assigned tasks
    • Research potential Urban New York ideas
    • Assist in compiling details and descriptions of every trip
    • Help maintain up-to-date and accurate information on the Urban New York website
    • Assist with advertising each lottery and the Urban New York program
    • Assist with managing Urban New York social media presence
    • Fill out post-trip surveys after each trip
  • Communication
    • Respond to all related emails within 24–48 hours
    • Compose and submit a report of each trip using the Event Summary Form and checklist
    • Contact and send reminders to lottery winners and those on the waitlist with the trip details and logistics by the expected deadlines
    • Contact and stay in communication with the participating faculty or staff member attending the trip with the trip details and logistics
    • Follow up with the trip attendees after each outing with a survey/assessment
    • Keep Assistant Director of Student Engagement Nina Lam updated on all correspondence and information regarding each trip and fill out required documents and tracking sheets
    • Assist assessment surveys and feedback for each trip 
  • Trips
    • Lead one to four trips per semester
    • Prepare a full “trip packet” before each event
    • Prepare the route to and from each trip location for trips
    • Manage the check-in process for the winners, those on the waitlist, as well as those waiting for standby tickets
    • Facilitate introductions/ice breakers before each trip and communicate rules and expectations for the outing
    • Prepare and facilitate debrief conversation with the group after trips, and facilitate discussion questions
    • Return the final roster for each trip to Assistant Director of Student Engagement Nina Lam
    • Take and save/submit pictures of each trip for Urban New York social media, archives and future use
    • Fill out post-trip surveys after each trip led
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Must be enrolled as a Columbia University undergraduate for the 202324 academic year in Columbia College or Columbia Engineering
  • Must be in good academic and judicial standing for the semester prior to and the semester during your time as a TL
  • Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5
  • Must be an incoming sophomore, junior or senior (incoming first-year students are ineligible to apply)
