Welcome to Columbia University in the City of New York!

Living in a large, metropolitan area for the first time can be both exciting and daunting. Multicultural Affairs, in collaboration with University partners and student leaders, is here to celebrate your journey as you explore the city and experience all the opportunities that being part of an urban university provides. When you need a touch of home or need a hand as you navigate life here, we are here for you.

Transition Support

Pre-arrival & Orientation

Connect with staff and current rural students through pre-arrival webinars or orientation programs. Discuss campus life, tips for living in NYC, and key support resources.

NYC Outings

While experiencing the rich culture and history of NYC during these free group outings, get a “locals” view of the city and learn how to navigate public transportation.

Community Connections

Family Dinners

Join our monthly homestyle dinners as we chat about life on campus and swap stories. Each is hosted by a special guest who selects the meal that reflects a bit of their home.

Break Programs

Staying on campus during fall or spring break? You are in good company! Join us for community building activities that have included Broadway shows, film screenings, and museums visits.

Mentorship

Columbia Mentoring Initiative (CMI)

Complementing the Blueprint Mentorship Program (Columbia Engineering) and Odyssey Mentoring Program (Columbia College), CMI provides one-on-one and group mentorship as well as community building programs centering cultural and identity connections and learning. First-year and transfer students (mentees) are connected with returning students (mentors) and all students with alumni. Rural student mentees also can opt to be connected with a rural student mentor. Open to all CC/SEAS undergraduates.

Community Outreach

Through Undergraduate Admissions, students have opportunities to give back and connect with their home communities!

Rural Recruitment Committee

The RCC supports rural and small town outreach initiatives within Undergraduate Admissions and provides a community for current rural students.

Take Columbia Home

A peer-to-peer program that allows Columbia students to visit rural and small-town high schools in their local region during academic breaks.
