A self-described "Black, Lesbian, Mother, Warrior, Poet," Audre Lorde LS'60 (1934-1992) utilized the power of her pen to articulate the critical intersections of race, class, gender, sexuality, ability, and nationality and her voice to transform words into actions confronting social injustices. She emphasized the importance of bringing one's whole self fully into spaces, and centered building connections and accountability while honoring our differences. Multicultural Affairs builds from her work and legacy as she continues to inspire and challenge our campus to uplift and work in solidarity with one another. Her words, "Without community there is no liberation," informs our work focusing on the power of collective healing and coalition building within and across identity communities as we work with students and colleagues to actualize liberatory practices on our campus.
Audre Lorde Community Space
Year round, students can learn more about Audre Lorde by visiting the Audre Lorde Community Space in 505 Lerner, participating in Multicultural Affairs programs and dialogues inspired by her texts, and take courses that bring her work into the classroom.
Camp Audre
Camp Audre is an annual welcome celebration and social event that centers joy, (re)connections, and community.
For the 2025-26 academic year, Camp Audre will take place on Tuesday, September 9, 6:00 p.m. on Furnald Lawn and other outdoor spaces on lower campus.

Audre Lorde Week
Hosted by Multicultural Affairs, this week-long series honors the life, work, and teachings of Audre Lorde LS'60 and takes place annually during her birthday week. Programs and activities invite students to reflect on her writings and words as well as to engage with and apply her philosophies as actualized ways of being in community with each other.
