Alternative Spring Break: NYC Arts and Culture

The Alternative Spring Break: NYC Arts & Culture (ASB) program aims to provide undergraduate students in Columbia College, Columbia Engineering, and General Studies with exposure to the world of performing arts in NYC. For 2026, the theme is “Reimagined Works on the New York Stage” and will take place between March 17-21 (Spring Break)*.  Throughout the week, students will explore different theatrical performances and experiences on Broadway and beyond.

*Dates and times for activities and events are still being solidified. All participants are expected to participate in all ASB activities in their entirety; this is an immersive program and participants should NOT participate in other meetings/events/plans during this period.

Program Goals

  • Connect students to the world of New York theatre and the larger arts community

  • Expand student knowledge on the landscape of reimagined, revived, and adapted works on stage

  • Expose students to companies, workshops, and arts-related networks

  • Develop and practice students' critical thinking and reflection skills through facilitated discussions, shared dialogue, and written responses following performances

Details

  • 10-12 student participants will be selected to take part in the program.

  • The program will take place over the course of 5 days and include facilitated dialogue, activities, reflection, and 4-5 outings to theatrical experiences.

  • ASB provides three meals per day along with transportation and tickets to group outings during the program. Students will be provided with FLEX points on their CUID for use at establishments on and around campus.

Dates and Eligibility

  • Spring Break 2026: Tuesday, March 17-Saturday, March 21*

  • The ASB program application is open to any undergraduate student in Columbia College, Columbia Engineering, and General Studies in good academic and judicial standing. The program is limited to 10-12 students and is ideal for those with a passion, interest, or curiosity for theatre and the performing arts, though prior experience is not required.
