Tune in this Sunday at 11pm to our weekly In All Languages, exploring different types of music from all parts of the world. This week's program will feature music from the various folk traditions of Europe, Asia and Ocenia with a lingering focus on Ireland and Siberia. We will explore the cultural characteristics of those regions as well as the potential similarities in their folkoric repertoire through popular songs in their original or transformed versions as well as instrumental pieces.

Tune in to In All Languages this Sunday at 11PM to commemorate the life and music of Nikhil Banerjee. Nikhil Banerjee is one of the greatest Sitar players of the twentieth century. He began studying the instrument at the age of four, and was quickly recognized as a prodigy. He later studied with both Ustad Allauddin Khan and his son, Ali Akbar Khan, and began to develop his own musical style. This show will focus on three unique live recordings from his earliest years to his latest.

Join us this Wednesday September 24 from 6 to 9 PM to catch a special edition of the Musician's Show featuring trombonist and composer Ryan Keberle. Keberle will be coming in to talk about his current projects, his exciting career, his influences, and more, and will also select the tunes for the evening drawing from his own work and the work of his favorite musicians.

Tune in to Jazz Alternatives from 6-9pm Friday September 26 to hear an interview with Yano Akiko, one of Japan’s most preeminent jazz pianists, and Agatsuma Hiromitsu, a traditional Japanese shamisen musician known for crossing over into many different genres. The two will play together for the first time on Saturday 27 at the Japan Society.

Tune to Afternoon New Music from 3-6PM on Monday, September 22nd to hear a live interview with Billy Martin, Evan Lurie, and Steven Bernstein of the avant-jazz group, the Lounge Lizards. The Lounge Lizards formed in the New York in the late 1970s, founded by saxophonist John Lurie and pianist Evan Lurie. Tune in to hear the Lounge Lizards discuss their upcoming performances at Town Hall and at the Strange and Beautiful Festival. Listen!

Join us at WKCR as we commemorate the life and work of jazz trumpeter and flugelhorn player Kenny Wheeler, who passed away at the age of 84 years this Thursday, September 18th. We will be dedicating all jazz programming to Wheeler's innovative sounds and compositions from 1am on Sunday, September 21st through 9pm on Monday, September 22nd (including Jazz 'til Dawn 1-6am, Jazz Profiles 2-7pm, Monday Mornings in Mono 2-5am, Daybreak Express 5-8:20am, Out to Lunch 12-3pm, and Jazz Alternatives 6-9pm).

She will be on air discussing everything about her music and her career, from its beginnings in Santiago, Chile to her most recent projects with the Crash Trio, which also includes Pablo Menares on bass and Francisco Mela on drums. A graduate of the Berklee College of Music and the 2013 reciepient of the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition, Aladana already has a vast and diverse experience to share.

On Tuesday, September 23rd, WKCR will conduct its annual all-day tribute to John Coltrane on the 88th anniversary of his birth. Born on September 23, 1926 in North Carolina, Coltrane is celebrated to this day for his innovative work on alto, tenor, and soprano saxophones, as well as his enormous contributions to the genres of bebop, hard bop, and free and avant-garde jazz.

This Sunday Night's IAL show at 11pm will feature a live performance from Kora legend Foday Musa Suso known in the west from his collaborations with Phillip Glass, Herbie Hancock, Paul Simon, Pharaoh Sanders, Jack DeJohnette and countless others.

Tune in this Wednesday from 6-9 PM for a special edition of the Musician Show where we are joined by guitarist Mike Bono, who will play some tunes and talk about his work. Mike Bono began playing guitar at age 5, then going on to attend Berklee College of Music. Since graduating, he has led his own group, the Mike Bono Group, for which he composes the music. They recently released their debut album, From Where You Are.

Tonight Matthew Shipp and WKCR host Mitch Goldman put Paul Bley and Jimmy Giuffre in Deep Focus. They will share some stunning live recordings and, of course, Matt's unique point of view on this utterly distinctive music.

Hailing from Brooklyn, TONGUES is a power trio that prides itself on “sensitivity within insensitivity”. Equal parts noise, free improvisation, punk, and post-modern composition. Tune in the Sunday at 11PM for the IAL show which shall explore the themes of love and devotion in the music of South Asia, specifically looking at genres such as ghazal (sung Sufi poetry), thumris (Krishna devotional songs traditionally performed by subaltern women) and other forms of bhajans (Hindu devotional songs). The show surveys music from both the Islamic and Hindu traditions, and seeks to elucidate concepts such as ishq (love, often divine love) and bhakti (devotion).

In her five years since moving to New York from Santiago, Chile, Meza has made waves with her original music which weaves jazz with Latin American influence as well as elements from contemporary and popular music. Gifted in both composition and improvisation, she has released three albums under her own name and has played live at venues such as Jazz Standard, Village Vanguard, Blue Note, Smalls Jazz Club, The Jazz Gallery and Rockwood Music Hall.

This Sunday's In All Languages program will focus on exploring a variety of forms of Tibetan music, ranging from Buddhist ritual music, to opera, to contemporary recordings by Tibetan artists in exile. We will begin by listening to recordings of Buddhist rites performed by Tibetan monks in Bhutan, followed by a selection of other examples of Buddhist chants.

WKCR is saddened to announce the departure of Eastern Standard Time regular host, Carter Van Pelt. Carter has been hosting the Saturday reggae show seven years ago and has been sharing every week his knowledge and love of the music for the pleasure of all of our listeners. He will be hosting his last show on Saturday, August 30th so tune in one last time to hear Carter Van Pelt on Eastern Standard Time!

Tune in to this week IAL show as we will be looking at chinese classical music through several orchestral pieces. Chinese classical music draws its roots in the music played in royal courts using specific instruments such as the Yangquin or the Shen. Chinese classical music re-emerged in the 20th century after taking on the structure of the Western Orchestra. Most of the pieces evoque a story, often linked to folkolric legends or narrating major historical events.
