Broadcast live from the Metropolitan Opera in 1937, this vintage performance conducted by Maurice de Abravanel features an all-star cast including: René Maison; Karin Branzell; and the legendary Kirsten Flagstad. We will also host a ticket giveaway for Ildar Abdrazakov's recital debut at Carnegie Hall this Thursday night.

Famed for the sheer size and raw power of her voice, Obraztsova's total commitment to her work made her ideal for roles from Verdi to Prokoviev. In addition to her studio recordings, the broadcast will feature rare live performances. Stepan Atamian hosts.

Ivy League play begins for both Columbia Men's and Women's Basketball this Saturday afternoon at Cornell. Coverage begins exclusively on the MP3 stream with Lions Countdown at 12:45p.m. for the women's game. Then tune in to 89.9 FM or online at 4:00p.m. for our coverage of the men's league opener. On January 10th, WKCR celebrates the anniversary of the birthday of peerless jazz icon Max Roach, born in 1924. As a drummer, he was an integral part of nearly every jazz movement from bebop onward, accompanying such giants as Charlie Parker, Clifford Brown, and Cecil Taylor. As a bandleader and composer, he created some of the most socially aware records of the tumultuous civil rights movement in the 1960s. As an educator, he gave his time and ear to countless musicians who have since passed on into the contemporary world of the music he helped bring about.

Tune in Live Constructions this Sunday, January 4th at 10PM to hear a live in-studio set by Lea Bertucci (bass clarinet) and Leila Bordreuil (cello). They have been performing together as a duo for several years, and they are preparing for the first performance of Lea Bertucci's residency at Issue Project Room (this Thursday, at 8PM). Tune in this Wednesday at 10pm to listen to a live interview with the New York-based Argentinean composer Marcelo Toledo. 2013 NYFA Fellow, 2009 DAAD Artist in Residence in Berlin Fellow, Toledo has developed through the years an interest toward the exploration of instrumental timbre, complex sounds and new instrumental techniques becoming a characteristic facet of his compositions.

A prolific composer and influential trombonist in both the traditional and avant-garde areas of jazz, Grachan Moncur III has been making music for over half a century. Since 1959, Moncur has played with Ray Charles, Art Farmer, Benny Golson, Sonny Rollins, Jackie McLean, Lee Morgan, Wayne Shorter, and Herbie Hancock as well as Archie Shepp, Marion Brown, Roswell Rudd, and Beaver Harris. Join us on this week's Jazz Profiles for an in-depth look at Moncur's life and work, including his collaborations with a number of these artists across different genres and periods.

Tune in to Middle-Eastern Influences tonight at 12am as we will continue our series focused on the singer and actress Sabah in order to commemorate the life and work of the lebanese artist and singer Sabah who passed away earlier this week at the age 87 years old.

This second part of the memorial broadcast, will focus on the theme of "Sabah sings Lebanon" looking at specific songs in which she evokes her country Lebanon. Indeed, the theme of the homeland is a recurrent one in popular Arab music and we will see how Sabah appropriated it in her music.

Columbia and Barnard's anti-sexual assault movement have gotten significant national media attention, but the coverage never strays far beyond profiling the loudest voices. Naomi Cohen sits with Smita Sen, who started organizing around sexual assault last fall, to talk about the activists who have stayed in the shadows. They discuss the work done before No Red Tape, the survivors who aren't showing up to the rallies, and the arguments that aren't painted on the signs.

His four albums as a leader, Elevated Vegetation, The Invisible Trio, The Prisoner, and Quartet have been praised by the New York Times, NYC Jazz Record, and JazzTimes. His latest release entitled Big Eyed Rabbit is the debut album of a collaborative trio with Ross Martin and Jeff Davis.

Tune in tonight at 9PM for a special arts interview with Julie Cohen, three-time New York Emmy-winner and producer of "The Sturgeon Queens," which explores the history behind Russ and Daughters, a famous lox and bagel store on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Cohen dicusses her experience with Jewish film audiences, and explains how the history behind the store reflects the experience of many Jewish immigrants.

The show will also feature a special focus on the Nigerian musician and composer Fela Kuti, one of the pioneers of the Afrobeat genra.

Tune in to Middle-Eastern Influences tonight at 12am as we will commemorate the life and work of the lebanese artist and singer Sabah who passed away earlier this week at the age 87 years old.

Sabah was born in 1927 and soon aquired a major role in the movie and music scene of the Arab World. Known as the "Diva" she recorded more than 3,500 songs and was one of the first female singers to perform outside of the Arab World, in Paris or New York.

Tune in this Wednesday at 10pm to listen to a live performance and interview with Arthur Kampela and guests. Born in Brazil, Kampela is currently a Professor in the Music Department at Columbia University and recipient of the 2014 Guggenheim Award for Creative Arts.
