The story of Armida has fascinated artists since the sixteenth century. From Lully to Judith Weir, composers are continually inspired by the love affair between the Saracen sorceress and the Crusader knight, Rinaldo. Using Haydn's Armida (in the Harnoncourt recording with Cecilia Bartoli, Christoph Prégardien, and Patricia Petibon) as a focal point, Saturday night's program will be an exploration of the various musical representations of the fantastical story. Tune in to the In All Languages show, Sunday February 15th from 11pm to 2am to explore the sounds of continental Southeast Asia. From the harp music of Burma to the zithers of Vietnam, we will present the music of the Indochinese Peninsula with its various specificities and instruments.

Tune in as we bring you four Columbia basketball games this Valentine's Day weekend! First, the men visit Harvard tonight. Coverage begins at 5:45 p.m. You can listen to the broadcasts of the women's game against Harvard beginning at 7 p.m. on the Real Audio stream. The women's game can also be heard on the MP3 stream at the conclusion of the men's broadcast. Coverage of both games against Dartmouth begins at 6:45 p.m. on Saturday evening. You can hear the men's game at 89.9 FM or the MP3 stream, while the women's game will stream on the Real Audio stream.

Tune in Wednesday evening from 6-9 PM to hear this week's edition of the Musician's Show, where we will be joined by organist Jared Gold. Jared Gold has become on the top organists around New York City. He has played with guitarists John Abercrombie, Ed Cherry, Jimmy Ponder, saxaphonists Oliver Lake, Ralph Bowen, Don Braden, and drummers Adam Nussbaum, Ralph Peterson, and Tony Reedus, among many others. He has been guitarist Dave Stryker’s organist of choice since 2004 and plays on Stryker’s latest release, Eight Track.

Holiday or not, Phil Schaap will be on-air for Out To Lunch for his annual Presidential Address Broadcast (that would be by Lester Young). Tune in from noon – 3pm ET on Monday, February 16^th to hear this special broadcast!

Tune in Wednesday evening from 6-9 PM to hear this week's edition of the Musician's Show, where we will be joined by trumpeter, composer, bandleader, and educator Josh Lawrence and drummer Anwar Marshall. Lawrence and Marshall are both graduates of the music program at UArts and are regular members of the Orrin Evans Captain Black Big Band, which features some of the best soloists from New York and Philadelphia.

Tune in to the In All Languages show, Sunday 1st of February from 11pm to 2am to hear a special series exploring the fusion between traditional Arabic music with jazz expressions. We'll see how certain jazz musicians from the Middle-East such as the trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf are reshaping the expressions of jazz sounds. We will also look at musicians like Anouar Brahem, Dhafer Youssef or Rabih-Abou Khalil coming from a classical Arabic music background in which they integrate the traditional oud in a jazz context.

Tune in Wednesday evening from 6-9 PM to hear this week's edition of the Musician's Show, where we will be joined by guitarist Oz Noy. Noy was born in Israel, and began planning professionally at age 13. By his mid-20s he was an established studio musician, performing with the house band of Israel’s top-rated television show. Noy made the move to New York City in 1996, and since, has performed at some of the best live music venues in New York including the Bitter End, the Iridium, and the Blue Note.

WKCR is pleased to bring you a special festival broadcast dedicated to Antonio "Tom" Carlos Jobim on his birthday Sunday, January 25th from 10:00 AM until 8:00 PM! Born on January 25th 1927 in Rio de Janeiro, Jobim would go on to become one of the most influential songwriters and composers of the twentieth century, he is most reowned for his significant impacts in the bossa nova style. To celebrate Jobim’s enormous musical contributions, we will be playing his music on his birthday as well as interviews and other materials.

Tune in to Saturday Night at the Opera for a landmark recording of Richard Wagner's Lohengrin. Broadcast live from the Metropolitan Opera in 1937, this vintage performance conducted by Maurice de Abravanel features an all-star cast including: René Maison; Karin Branzell; and the legendary Kirsten Flagstad. We will also host a ticket giveaway for Ildar Abdrazakov's recital debut at Carnegie Hall this Thursday night.

Tune in this Sunday from 2pm to 7pm to hear an in-depth broadcast on the life and music of tenor saxophonist, pianist, and arranger Ike Quebec hosted by Sid Gribetz. He developed a sensitive sound on the tenor saxophone in Coleman Hawkins lineage, shining on ballads yet burning on up-tempo tunes.

Famed for the sheer size and raw power of her voice, Obraztsova's total commitment to her work made her ideal for roles from Verdi to Prokoviev. In addition to her studio recordings, the broadcast will feature rare live performances. Stepan Atamian hosts.

Ivy League play begins for both Columbia Men's and Women's Basketball this Saturday afternoon at Cornell. Coverage begins exclusively on the MP3 stream with Lions Countdown at 12:45p.m. for the women's game. Then tune in to 89.9 FM or online at 4:00p.m. for our coverage of the men's league opener. On January 10th, WKCR celebrates the anniversary of the birthday of peerless jazz icon Max Roach, born in 1924. As a drummer, he was an integral part of nearly every jazz movement from bebop onward, accompanying such giants as Charlie Parker, Clifford Brown, and Cecil Taylor. As a bandleader and composer, he created some of the most socially aware records of the tumultuous civil rights movement in the 1960s. As an educator, he gave his time and ear to countless musicians who have since passed on into the contemporary world of the music he helped bring about.

Tune in Live Constructions this Sunday, January 4th at 10PM to hear a live in-studio set by Lea Bertucci (bass clarinet) and Leila Bordreuil (cello). They have been performing together as a duo for several years, and they are preparing for the first performance of Lea Bertucci's residency at Issue Project Room (this Thursday, at 8PM). The pair will be coming to our studio for a live set of original music, followed by an interview. Listen!

Join us as we honor the life and work of jazz clarinetist Buddy DeFranco, who passed away on Thursday, December 24th at the age of 91. We will preempt regular jazz programming from 5:00am on Thursday until 9:00pm Friday evening.
