Basketball Simulcasts this Weekend

Tune in as we bring you four Columbia basketball games this Valentine's Day weekend! First, the men visit Harvard tonight. Coverage begins at 5:45 p.m. You can listen to the broadcasts of the women's game against Harvard beginning at 7 p.m. on the Real Audio stream. The women's game can also be heard on the MP3 stream at the conclusion of the men's broadcast. Coverage of both games against Dartmouth begins at 6:45 p.m. on Saturday evening. You can hear the men's game at 89.9 FM or the MP3 stream, while the women's game will stream on the Real Audio stream.

Jared Gold on the Musician's Show

Tune in Wednesday evening from 6-9 PM to hear this week's edition of the Musician's Show, where we will be joined by organist Jared Gold. Jared Gold has become on the top organists around New York City. He has played with guitarists John Abercrombie, Ed Cherry, Jimmy Ponder, saxaphonists Oliver Lake, Ralph Bowen, Don Braden, and drummers Adam Nussbaum, Ralph Peterson, and Tony Reedus, among many others. He has been guitarist Dave Stryker’s organist of choice since 2004 and plays on Stryker’s latest release, Eight Track.

Josh Lawrence and Anwar Marshall on the Musician's Show

Lawrence and Marshall are both graduates of the music program at UArts and are regular members of the Orrin Evans Captain Black Big Band, which features some of the best soloists from New York and Philadelphia.

Jazz & the Arab World on In All Languages

Tune in to the In All Languages show, Sunday 1st of February from 11pm to 2am to hear a special series exploring the fusion between traditional Arabic music with jazz expressions. We'll see how certain jazz musicians from the Middle-East such as the trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf are reshaping the expressions of jazz sounds. We will also look at musicians like Anouar Brahem, Dhafer Youssef or Rabih-Abou Khalil coming from a classical Arabic music background in which they integrate the traditional oud in a jazz context.

Oz Noy on the Musician's Show

Tune in Wednesday evening from 6-9 PM to hear this week's edition of the Musician's Show, where we will be joined by guitarist Oz Noy. Noy was born in Israel, and began planning professionally at age 13. By his mid-20s he was an established studio musician, performing with the house band of Israel’s top-rated television show. Noy made the move to New York City in 1996, and since, has performed at some of the best live music venues in New York including the Bitter End, the Iridium, and the Blue Note.

WKCR is pleased to bring you a special festival broadcast dedicated to Antonio "Tom" Carlos Jobim on his birthday Sunday, January 25th from 10:00 AM until 8:00 PM! Born on January 25th 1927 in Rio de Janeiro, Jobim would go on to become one of the most influential songwriters and composers of the twentieth century, he is most reowned for his significant impacts in the bossa nova style. To celebrate Jobim’s enormous musical contributions, we will be playing his music on his birthday as well as interviews and other materials.

Greek Music on In All Languages

Tune in this Sunday, January 25th from 11pm-2am on the In All Languages show as we celebrate Greek music. We will hear rare recordings of traditional music from Crete as well as Greek songs by Amalia Hanim. From there we will hear the plaintive instrumentation evolve to the more complex production of Greek music today. Artists like Loudovikos Ton Anoyíon, Kristi Stassinopoulou, and more will be featured.

Join us Tuesday, January 17 during our Out to Lunch programming from 1-2:30 pm EST for an interview with New York-based jazz pianist Emmet Cohen regarding his most recent project "Masters Legacy Series featuring Jimmy Cobb." Cohen began Suzuki method piano instruction at age three, and his playing quickly became a mature melding of musicality, technique, and concept. He placed first in both the American Jazz Pianists competition (2014) and the Phillips Piano Competition at the University of West Florida (2011).

Gustav Leonhardt Memorial Broadcast

This Friday, January 20th, WKCR will be devoting over eleven hours of programming to the music of Gustav Leonhardt (5/30/1928-1/16/2012). As a harpsichordist, organist, and conductor, Leonhardt was on the forefront of the movement in early music to revive period styles and practices. While best known for his recordings of J.S. Bach, Leonhardt made spectacular recordings of many different early music and Baroque composers. Tune in from 9:30am-9:00pm to hear WKCR's tribute to this legendary musician.
