Saturday Night At The Opera: Elena Obraztsova Memorial Broadcast

Tune in to Saturday Night At The Opera for a commemorative broadcast in memory of Elena Obraztsova. Famed for the sheer size and raw power of her voice, Obraztsova's total commitment to her work made her ideal for roles from Verdi to Prokoviev. The 14-Game Tournaments Begin!

Ivy League play begins for both Columbia Men's and Women's Basketball this Saturday afternoon at Cornell. Coverage begins exclusively on the MP3 stream with Lions Countdown at 12:45p.m. for the women's game. Then tune in to 89.9 FM or online at 4:00p.m. for our coverage of the men's league opener. Max Roach Birthday Broadcast

On January 10th, WKCR celebrates the anniversary of the birthday of peerless jazz icon Max Roach, born in 1924. As a drummer, he was an integral part of nearly every jazz movement from bebop onward, accompanying such giants as Charlie Parker, Clifford Brown, and Cecil Taylor. As a bandleader and composer, he created some of the most socially aware records of the tumultuous civil rights movement in the 1960s. As an educator, he gave his time and ear to countless musicians who have since passed on into the contemporary world of the music he helped bring about.

Live Constructions: Lea Bertucci and Leila Bordreuil

Tune in Live Constructions this Sunday, January 4th at 10PM to hear a live in-studio set by Lea Bertucci (bass clarinet) and Leila Bordreuil (cello). They have been performing together as a duo for several years, and they are preparing for the first performance of Lea Bertucci's residency at Issue Project Room (this Thursday, at 8PM). Emmet Cohen on Out to Lunch

Join us Tuesday, January 17 during our Out to Lunch programming from 1-2:30 pm EST for an interview with New York-based jazz pianist Emmet Cohen regarding his most recent project "Masters Legacy Series featuring Jimmy Cobb." Cohen began Suzuki method piano instruction at age three, and his playing quickly became a mature melding of musicality, technique, and concept. He placed first in both the American Jazz Pianists competition (2014) and the Phillips Piano Competition at the University of West Florida (2011).

Gustav Leonhardt Memorial Broadcast

This Friday, January 20th, WKCR will be devoting over eleven hours of programming to the music of Gustav Leonhardt (5/30/1928-1/16/2012). As a harpsichordist, organist, and conductor, Leonhardt was on the forefront of the movement in early music to revive period styles and practices. While best known for his recordings of J.S. Bach, Leonhardt made spectacular recordings of many different early music and Baroque composers. Tune in from 9:30am-9:00pm to hear WKCR's tribute to this legendary musician.
