You already know what wonderful music one guitar can make, what about two guitars? Tune in this Sunday March 8th at 11 pm to "In All Languages" for a journey through music full of stories and passion made by Depapepe, a Japanese acoustic guitar duo. They have had successful concerts in Japan, Indonesia, and Thailand. They also performed at Java Jazz Festival in 2012 in Indonesia.

Bix Beiderbecke Birthday Broadcast: Tuesday, March 10

Cornetist, pianist, and composer Leon “Bix” Beiderbecke was one of the great musical innovators to emerge in the 1920s. One of jazz’s earliest soloists, he is of enduring importance to the dynamic history of jazz. This Monday, WKCR will dedicate 24 hours of programming to Bix in honor of his 112th birthday anniversary. Young Bix taught himself to play cornet, listening to his brother’s Victrola phonograph and records of the Original Dixieland Jazz Band.

Ornette Coleman Birthday Broadcast: Monday, March 9

Tune in to WKCR as we dedicate a full day of programming to the celebration of the 85th birthday of Ornette Coleman! Ornette Coleman is and has been pursuing the untouched horizons in music since the beginning of his career. Emerging from the Texas blues tradition (all of his music has the gutbucket wail of the blues in there somewhere), Ornette took L.A. and then New York City by storm with his visionary quartet in the late 1950s. His revolutionary concept placed melody, not harmony, at the center of improvisation. That's the key to really hearing Ornette--it's all in the melodies.

Jazz Profiles - Herman Chittison

Join us from 2 to 7pm Sunday, March 8 for an in-depth profile on pianist Herman Chittison, Hosted by Charles Iselin. Though he never achieved widespread fame, Chittison was a unique and masterful pianist of the Swing era, famed for his talent as a vocal accompanist. A native of Kentucky, born in 1908, Chittison had his first break as a musician when he joined Zack Whyte’s Band, but his career took a significant leap when he joined Willie Lewis on his 1934 tour of Europe.

Curtis Nowosad on the Musician's Show

A Winnipeg native, Nowosad currently resides in New York City, and has performed at some of the city's best venues, including Smalls, Smoke, and Dizzy's Club Coca Cola, as well as jazz festivals in Canada, including Ottawa Jazz Festival and the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal.

Join us Tuesday, January 17 during our Out to Lunch programming from 1-2:30 pm EST for an interview with New York-based jazz pianist Emmet Cohen regarding his most recent project "Masters Legacy Series featuring Jimmy Cobb." Cohen began Suzuki method piano instruction at age three, and his playing quickly became a mature melding of musicality, technique, and concept. He placed first in both the American Jazz Pianists competition (2014) and the Phillips Piano Competition at the University of West Florida (2011).

Gustav Leonhardt Memorial Broadcast

This Friday, January 20th, WKCR will be devoting over eleven hours of programming to the music of Gustav Leonhardt (5/30/1928-1/16/2012). As a harpsichordist, organist, and conductor, Leonhardt was on the forefront of the movement in early music to revive period styles and practices. While best known for his recordings of J.S. Bach, Leonhardt made spectacular recordings of many different early music and Baroque composers. Tune in from 9:30am-9:00pm to hear WKCR's tribute to this legendary musician.
