Less than two weeks after hanging tough with the top team in the nation, Columbia sets its sights on the UConn Huskies, the defending national champions. The Lions are facing UConn for the second time in four years, but this time they have their sights set on the upset. Live coverage begins at 7:15pm with tipoff from Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, Connecticut coming just after 7:30.

Since 1959, Moncur has played with Ray Charles, Art Farmer, Benny Golson, Sonny Rollins, Jackie McLean, Lee Morgan, Wayne Shorter, and Herbie Hancock as well as Archie Shepp, Marion Brown, Roswell Rudd, and Beaver Harris. Join us on this week's Jazz Profiles for an in-depth look at Moncur's life and work, including his collaborations with a number of these artists across different genres and periods.

Sabah Memorial Broadcast II on Middle-Eastern Influences: Sabah Sings Lebanon

Tune in to Middle-Eastern Influences tonight at 12am as we will continue our series focused on the singer and actress Sabah in order to commemorate the life and work of the lebanese artist and singer Sabah who passed away earlier this week at the age 87 years old.

This second part of the memorial broadcast, will focus on the theme of "Sabah sings Lebanon" looking at specific songs in which she evokes her country Lebanon. Indeed, the theme of the homeland is a recurrent one in popular Arab music and we will see how Sabah appropriated it in her music.

They discuss the work done before No Red Tape, the survivors who aren't showing up to the rallies, and the arguments that aren't painted on the signs.

Join us Tuesday, January 17 during our Out to Lunch programming from 1-2:30 pm EST for an interview with New York-based jazz pianist Emmet Cohen regarding his most recent project "Masters Legacy Series featuring Jimmy Cobb." Cohen began Suzuki method piano instruction at age three, and his playing quickly became a mature melding of musicality, technique, and concept. He placed first in both the American Jazz Pianists competition (2014) and the Phillips Piano Competition at the University of West Florida (2011).

Gustav Leonhardt Memorial Broadcast

This Friday, January 20th, WKCR will be devoting over eleven hours of programming to the music of Gustav Leonhardt (5/30/1928-1/16/2012). As a harpsichordist, organist, and conductor, Leonhardt was on the forefront of the movement in early music to revive period styles and practices. While best known for his recordings of J.S. Bach, Leonhardt made spectacular recordings of many different early music and Baroque composers. Tune in from 9:30am-9:00pm to hear WKCR's tribute to this legendary musician.
