Mark Dresser on Afternoon New Music

Tune in to Afternoon New Music, on Monday, May 25th from 3 to 6PM to hear an interview with bassist and composer Mark Dresser. Dresser has played in a variety of jazz and avant-garde contexts, having recorded records with John Zorn, Anthony Braxton, Anthony Davis, and many others. He has also released a number of records as a leader, as well as several explorations into the limits of solo bass performance. Dresser came in to our station last week to talk about his music and his upcoming residency at the Stone. Listen!

Marcus Belgrave Memorial Broadcast

We previously announced that the Marcus Belgrave Memorial Broadcast would be on May 25. We are now moving it to Tuesday, May 26. We will be continuing Big Band Sounds through Memorial Day, May 25. We apologize for the inconvience.

In remembrance of the great Marcus Belgrave who passed away today, May 24, WKCR is dedicating our jazz programming to the music of the trumpet legend Marcus Belgrave on May 26. We do this in both memory and celebration of the life of this ingenious musician.

Gnecchi's Cassandra and Haeffner's Electra on Saturday Night at the Opera

There are many operatic adaptations of episodes from the Oresteia (most famously Richard Strauss's Elektra), but we will explore the work through two lesser-known operas. Vittorio Gnecchi's Cassandra retells the murder of Agamemnon in verismo fashion to be understood within the context of other Italian composers such as Zandonai and Cilea. This work is paired with Johann Christian Haeffner's Electra.

Richard Wagner on Thursday & Friday's Afternoon Classical!

In honor of Richard Wagner's birthday on May 22nd, Afternoon Classical on Thursday May 21st (3:00-6:00 PM) and Friday May 22nd (3:00-4:30 PM) will be dedicated exclusively to Richard Wagner.

Thursday's Afternoon Classical will feature an unforgettable live 1956 performance of Der Fliegende Holländer from Bayreuth with the legendary George London in the title role, Astrid Varnay as Senta, and Joseph Keilberth conducting. Elisabeth Stam hosts.

Baseball Vies for Third Straight Title in 2015 Ivy League Championship Series

For the third consecutive year, Columbia Baseball hosts Dartmouth in the Ivy League Championship Series. The Lions seek their third straight Ivy Title and another trip to the NCAA tournament. Coverage begins Saturday at 11:55 a.m. on the MP3 stream for Game 1. Game 2 will begin 30 minutes after the conclusion of Game 1 and can be heard both online and on 89.9 FM. If necessary, Game 3 would be played on Sunday, with coverage beginning at 12:50 p.m. on 89.9 FM and online. Follow @WKCRsports for further updates.

Emmet Cohen on Out to Lunch

Join us Tuesday, January 17 during our Out to Lunch programming from 1-2:30 pm EST for an interview with New York-based jazz pianist Emmet Cohen regarding his most recent project "Masters Legacy Series featuring Jimmy Cobb." Cohen began Suzuki method piano instruction at age three, and his playing quickly became a mature melding of musicality, technique, and concept. He placed first in both the American Jazz Pianists competition (2014) and the Phillips Piano Competition at the University of West Florida (2011).

Aspen Matis on Studio A

Tune in to Studio A this Sunday, January 15, from 9:00 PM - 10:00 PM EST for an interview with internationally-bestselling memoirist Aspen Matis. Her book, Girl in the Woods, tells the story of her sexual assault and her flight from college, which led to a journey of self-discovery as she set out to hike the entire Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico to Canada.

A brief account of her experiences appeared first in The New York Times' Modern Love column, and that subsequentally led to her inspiring and heart-wrenching memoir.

George Wallington Celebration on Jazz Profiles

Sid Gribetz presents a five hour radio program celebrating the pianist and composer George Wallington on Jazz Profiles this Sunday, January 15 from 2:00 PM - 7:00 PM EST.
George Wallington was one of the legendary pianists of the bebop era but never achieved great fame. With his early retirement from a musical career, he remains a more obscure figure in jazz history and lore.

Gustav Leonhardt Memorial Broadcast

This Friday, January 20th, WKCR will be devoting over eleven hours of programming to the music of Gustav Leonhardt (5/30/1928-1/16/2012). As a harpsichordist, organist, and conductor, Leonhardt was on the forefront of the movement in early music to revive period styles and practices. While best known for his recordings of J.S. Bach, Leonhardt made spectacular recordings of many different early music and Baroque composers. Tune in from 9:30am-9:00pm to hear WKCR's tribute to this legendary musician.
