Born in Los Angeles into a musical family (his father, Dick Nash, and uncle, the late Ted Nash, were both well-known jazz and studio musicians), Nash has that uncanny ability to mix freedom with substance, blues with intellect, and risk-taking with clarity. He is a co-founder of the New York-based Jazz Composers Collective, a musician-run, non-profit innovative entity dedicated to presenting the original works of composers pushing the boundaries of their self-expression. Nash is also a long-standing member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, with Wynton Marsalis.

Tune in on Thursday, January 10th as we honor legendary drummer Max Roach with 24 hours of programming in celebration of what would have been his 94th birthday. Arguably one of the most important bop drummers in history, Max Roach worked with the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington, and Thelonious Monk and made an indelible impact on jazz drumming and bebop as a whole. Born in 1924 in Pasquotank County, North Carolina, Roach moved with his family to Bedford-Stuyvesant in Brooklyn, New York when he was four years old.

We Have Voice is a collective of 14 musicians, performers, scholars, and thinkers from different generations, races, ethnicities, cultures, abilities, gender identities, economic backgrounds, religious beliefs and affiliations. Together, they are determined to engage in transformative ways of thinking and being in their creative professional world, while being ingrained in an inclusive and intersectional analysis.

Renowned singer Nancy Wilson died this past Thursday at the age of 81. Wilson was best known for the 1964 hit, "Guess Who I Saw Today" She has recorded more than 70 albums and won three Grammy awards, with her first album "Like in Love" coming out in 1959. WKCR will be playing her music on Dec. 17th (2-5 AM, 5-9:30 AM, 12-3 PM, 6-9 PM) as we continue to celebrate the life of Nancy Wilson in light of her passing.

WKCR announces the annual Bach Festival 2018, which this year is the 40th anniversary of the BachFest tradition. For the eight-day period from 12:00 AM on December 24th through 12:00 AM on New Year’s Day, WKCR (89.9 FM and wkcr.org) will dedicate all broadcasting to the works of Johann Sebastian Bach.

Tune in starting this Wednesday, November 21, for a 24-hour broadcast of Coleman Hawkins' music in celebration of his 114th birthday anniversary! As one of the first renowned jazz tenor saxophonists, Hawkins helped to establish the instrument as essential to the genre, especially for soloists. Hawkins' warm tone and signature vibrato, along with his melodic and technical virtuosity, made him a pivotal influence on future generations of jazz pioneers.

Join us from 12:00pm-2:00pm EST this Sunday November 18th for an in-studio live set and interview with Brooklyn-based HAM Rodeo. HAM Rodeo was formed in late 2017 by four mainstays of the New York City bluegrass scene. Led by vocalists Christian Apuzzo and Larry Cook, guitarist Justin Camerer, and drummer Ellery Marshall, the band realized there was a hunger among listeners in the traditional acoustic music scene for solid, classic country music for folks to dance to.

Tune in to Raag Aur Tal at 7pm on November 4th, as we feature special guest, Zakir Hussain, widely hailed as one of the global percussionists of our time. This interview, conducted by WKCR's David Ellenbogen, is in anticipation of Zakir's upcoming performance at The Town Hall with Bela Fleck, Edgar Meyer and Rakesh Chaurasia on November 15th.

Tune in on Tuesday, October 30th as we dedicate 24 hours of programming to legendary trumpeter Clifford “Brownie” Brown in celebration of the 88th anniversary of his birth. In the course of only four years, from 1952 to 1956, Brown led and contributed to some of the greatest ensembles and recordings in jazz history, leaving his imprint on the genres of bebop and hard bop, as well as the art of jazz trumpet. Born in 1930 in Delaware, Brown drew much of his influence from the innovative Fats Navarro, who mentored Brown in his early years in Philadelphia.

Tune in on Wednesday, October 10 to WKCR 89.9 FM-NY for 24 hours of Thelonious Sphere Monk’s music in celebration of the 101st day of his birth. Born in 1917 in North Carolina but raised in Manhattan, Monk first established his musicianship as a mostly self-taught travelling church organist. He marked his grand entrance into the New York jazz scene in 1941 as the new house pianist at the Minton’s Playhouse, the breeding grounds of bebop.

WKCR’s Sonidero Migrante is a 3 day radio festival celebrating Latinx music, art and activism in NYC. WKCR’s Latin department will be taking over the airwaves on 89.9 FM-NY from noon to midnight on Friday October 12th through Sunday October 14th with an expansive line up of emerging Latinx musicians, artists and organizers.

Tune in to Afternoon New Music at 3pm on Tuesday, September 25th for an exclusive in-studio interview and live set with composer Miya Masaoka and bassist James Ilgenfritz. Masaoka and Ilgenfritz will discuss their upcoming concert on Thursday, September 27th at Roulette. The concert will feature new compositions from Masaoka as part of Roulette's Interpretations series. Tuesday's Afternoon New Music program will also feature an in-studio live performance by Ilgenfritz of Masaoka's Four Moons of Pluto, as well as an exclusive ticket giveaway.

On Sunday, September 23rd, WKCR will conduct its annual all-day tribute to John Coltrane on the 88th anniversary of his birth. Born on September 23, 1926 in North Carolina, Coltrane is celebrated to this day for his innovative work on alto, tenor, and soprano saxophones, as well as his enormous contributions to the genres of bebop, hard bop, and free and avant-garde jazz.

Tomorrow, September 23rd, WKCR will once again preempt all regular programming to celebrate the life and work of John Coltrane from 12:00am to 12:00pm. Join us for long-form listenings and discussions about Coltrane approached from the perspective of bibliography, genre-bending and genre-working, collaborations and experimentations, and even modern dance choreographed to Coltrane. Tune in, online or on the FM, for this historic birthday celebration as we meditate on Coltrane, "Time After Time".

Tune in from 9-10 pm on Sept. 11 to hear an interview discussing the effects of separating refugee families, with recent research on Syrians in Jordan. This conversation was held through the Columbia University Earth Institute's Advanced Consortium on Cooperation, Conflict, and Complexity. Beginning Monday, August 27, WKCR will have a three-day festival dedicated to the music of tenor saxophonist Lester "Prez" Young, and alto saxophonist Charlie "Bird" Parker. The 27th marks Prez's birthday, and the 29th, Bird's. On Thursday, August 28th we will play both Prez and Bird interchangeably throughout the day.

To remember, honor and celebrate the Queen of Soul we will be devoting all of our Sunday programming to Aretha Franklin's work as a musician and as a voice for respect, change and freedom in society. Aretha Franklin's music brought us together in such profound ways, always deeply rooted in black experience, in the black church, in daily life.

Tune in at noon this Saturday, August 18th for a live set, conversation and music take-over with the Queen's-based soul artist, Duendita. Duendita aims to create art that provokes listeners to express themselves and begin journeys of purpose. Her work is guided by her spirituality and a love for the human experience.
