"Notes from Underground" showcases contemporary hip hop with an emphasis on emerging and experimental artists. The program is hosted by a variety of student programmers, each with their own eclectic taste in hip hop, so that its sound evolves alongside the genre. The program also hosts local and visiting artists for interviews, freestyles, and guest-curation. Tune in on Saturday nights from 12:30am-2am.

On Monday, September 23rd, WKCR will conduct its annual all-day tribute to John Coltrane on the 93rd anniversary of his birth. Born on September 23, 1926 in North Carolina, Coltrane is celebrated to this day for his innovative work on alto, tenor, and soprano saxophones, as well as his enormous contributions to the genres of bebop, hard bop, and free and avant-garde jazz. From the late 1940s to the mid-late 1950s, Coltrane collaborated with numerous jazz titans, performing as a sideman with the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, and Miles Davis, among others.

Tune in to Live Constructions at 10 pm on Sunday, September 22nd for an exclusive in-studio interview from composer/multi-instrumentalist Elliott Sharp. The hour-long program will cover Sharp's upcoming concert at Zürcher Gallery next Monday, September 30th, and his recently published memoir IrRational Music.

Join us this Wednesday on the Firing Lion from 9 to 10 pm for a discussion on the state of American soccer with Sunil Gulati. A senior lecturer of economics at Columbia University, Gulati has also served as President of the United States Soccer Federation and the FIFA Executive Committee.

Join us 6-9 pm this Wednesday as we host Sullivan Fortner on the Musician's Show! Lauded as one of the top jazz pianists of his generation, Sullivan Fortner is recognized for his virtuosic technique and captivating performances. The winner of three prestigious awards – a Leonore Annenberg Arts Fellowship, the 2015 Cole Porter Fellowship from the American Pianists Association, and the 2016 Lincoln Center Award for Emerging Artists – Sullivan’s music embodies the essence of the blues and jazz as he connects music of all eras and genres through his improvisation.

Tune in this Wednesday from 6pm to 1am to listen a Memorial Broadcast dedicated to João Gilberto. The show will encompass from his early and rare recordings before Bossa Nova to his most recent solo album released in 2004 along with relevant historical background. We will also feature exclusive WKCR interviews with important characters that were involved with João Gilberto such as the producer Creed Taylor, and one of the Tropicália artists Gilberto Gil. Hosted by Augusto Ghiotto and Jassvan DeLima .

This Sunday, June 23rd from 12 pm to 2 pm, WKCR will broadcast the Tennessee Border Show live from Governor Island's annual Porch Stomp, a free, community-led participatory folk festival, where performances take place on the porches of Governors Island’s historic Nolan Park. Over 100 small-scale acoustic concerts, jams, and workshops featuring some of NYC’s best bluegrass, country, blues, roots, and Americana music are showcased during the daylong festivities.

Please join us on Afternoon Classical on Thursday, May 30th for a special feature on the work of Meredith Monk. From 4-6pm, Isaac Jean-Francois will select parts of Monk's oeuvre to share along with some commentary on how we might engage with Monk's sound performatively.

Terell Stafford, acclaimed trumpet player based in New York, has been hailed as “one of the great players of our time, a fabulous trumpet player” by piano legend McCoy Tyner. Stafford is recognized as an incredibly gifted and versatile player, he combines a deep love of melody with his own brand of spirited and adventurous lyricism. Stafford’s exceptionally expressive and well defined musical talent allows him to dance in and around the rich trumpet tradition of his predecessors while making his own inroads.

Arguably the greatest composer that America has ever seen, Duke Ellington was born in 1899 in Washington D.C. In the early 1920's, Ellington ventured to New York where he would establish a long career as a bandleader, pianist, and prolific arranger and composer. Some famous jazz tunes written by Duke Ellington include "In a Sentimental Mood," "It Don't Mean a Thing if it Ain't Got That Swing," "Mood Indigo," and "Satin Doll." Ellington's career spanned sixty total years and led to the formation of some of the greatest big bands that jazz has ever seen.

On Sunday March 17th, we'll air an exclusive interview with the greatest living master of the bansuri, Hariprasad Chaurasia recorded by WKCR's David Ellenbogen at the Vrindaban Gurukul, in Mumbai. Chaurasia's disciple Jay Gandhi joined the discussion, and he'll join us in studio to curate a playlist of some great performances from Hariprasad's prolific career.

On Friday, March 15, Teri Towe and Simon Cohen will present a day-long celebration of the music of Beethoven on WKCR in anticipation of his 250th birthday year in 2020.

From 9am to 6pm, the broadcast will feature a wide-ranging survey of genres and performances, from the earliest classic renditions to the most up-to-date period instrument performances.

Tune in to WKCR for the 20^th annual Antonio Carlos Jobim Festival this Friday. With this festival, we will continue the tradition of broadcasting the music of Brazil's most famous composer, Antonio Carlos "Tom" Jobim on his birthday.

Born in Los Angeles into a musical family (his father, Dick Nash, and uncle, the late Ted Nash, were both well-known jazz and studio musicians), Nash has that uncanny ability to mix freedom with substance, blues with intellect, and risk-taking with clarity. He is a co-founder of the New York-based Jazz Composers Collective, a musician-run, non-profit innovative entity dedicated to presenting the original works of composers pushing the boundaries of their self-expression. Nash is also a long-standing member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, with Wynton Marsalis.

Tune in on Thursday, January 10th as we honor legendary drummer Max Roach with 24 hours of programming in celebration of what would have been his 94th birthday. Arguably one of the most important bop drummers in history, Max Roach worked with the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington, and Thelonious Monk and made an indelible impact on jazz drumming and bebop as a whole. Born in 1924 in Pasquotank County, North Carolina, Roach moved with his family to Bedford-Stuyvesant in Brooklyn, New York when he was four years old.

We Have Voice is a collective of 14 musicians, performers, scholars, and thinkers from different generations, races, ethnicities, cultures, abilities, gender identities, economic backgrounds, religious beliefs and affiliations. Together, they are determined to engage in transformative ways of thinking and being in their creative professional world, while being ingrained in an inclusive and intersectional analysis.

Renowned singer Nancy Wilson died this past Thursday at the age of 81. Wilson was best known for the 1964 hit, "Guess Who I Saw Today" She has recorded more than 70 albums and won three Grammy awards, with her first album "Like in Love" coming out in 1959. WKCR will be playing her music on Dec. 17th (2-5 AM, 5-9:30 AM, 12-3 PM, 6-9 PM) as we continue to celebrate the life of Nancy Wilson in light of her passing.
