This Friday, January 10th, marks what would be jazz drummer, composer, civil rights activist, educator, and overall legend Max Roach's 96th birthday. Celebrate it with us at WKCR as we honor his legacy with a 24 hour broadcast of his catalog! Working alongside Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, and more, Roach made essential contributions to the world of jazz drumming and to bebop as a whole. Outside of his music, which in and of itself was revolutionary in its sound and its message, Roach contributed to the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s and worked as a jazz educator during the later stages of his career. His legacy in the world of Jazz music is undeniable. Join us Friday as we attempt to share with you a small snippet of the genius that is Max Roach from midnight to midnight on WKCR.
