Ragas Live Festival

Saturday, October 19, 2019 - 7:00pm to Sunday, October 20, 2019 - 7:00pm

From October 19th at 7 pm to October 20th at 7pm, WKCR listeners around the world will tune in to hear the year’s latest developments in a growing musical movement The New York Times has called “the Raga Renaissance, flowering in Brooklyn.”

With inclusive, adventurous programming, the event features both traditional Indian Classical music and contemporary cross-cultural collaborations. The music of the event conforms to India’s ancient Raga Samay system, in which certain musical modes are only played at specific times, for example, Rag Todi, a scale/mode only played at sunrise.

Born as an in-studio broadcast at WKCR in 2012, the event has grown into a major live undertaking broadcasting live from Pioneer Works, in Red Hook, Brooklyn and is now attracting major artists.

Highlights include classical maestros Anupama Bhagwat and Saraswathi Ranganathan and groundbreaking projects with artists like Reggie Workman, Brindha Guha, Kaoru Wantanabe, Adam Rudolph, Yacouba Cissoko and Selvaganesh. The event will culminate by a large ensemble performance by Brooklyn Raga Massive.
