Philip White on Live Constructions

Tune in to this Sunday's Live Constructions for an in-studio live set by electronic musician Philip White. Through using a variety of electronic modules, White explores the autonomic and chaotic behavior of electronic systems, creating an aggressive and explosive sound. He has collaborated with a variety of different musicians in the noise, jazz, and contemporary concert music scenes. White will be bringing his set-up to our studios, and we will broadcast his solo performance live as it happens. Listen!

Willie Colon on Caribe Latino

Tune in this Monday, August 11th, at 10pm on Caribe Latino to listen to a live interview with Willie Colón. Legendary salsa singer and trombonist, he recorded his first album at the age of 17 and since then has collaborated with great figures such as Héctor Lavoe, Celia Cruz, Ismael Miranda, among others. The show Caribe Latinos is hosted by German Santana and Louis Lattiffe.

Fabian Almazan on the Musician's Show

This week on the Musician's Show, we are joined by pianist Fabian Almazan. As our guest host for the evening, he will take us through his career in music, sharing his own recordings in addition to the music of his influences and contemporaries. Almazan has studied with Mark Levine and performed with Dave Brubeck and Christian McBride as piano chair for the Brubeck Institute fellowship program, and has also studied with Kenny Barron at the Manhattan School of Music.

Joao Gilberto on Jazz Profiles

The show will encompass from his early and rare recordings before Bossa Nova to his most recent solo album released in 2000 along with relevant historical background. We will also feature exclusive WKCR interviews with important characters that were involved with João Gilberto such as his son Marcelo Gilberto, the producer Creed Taylor, one of the Tropicália artists Gilberto Gil, and the Bossa Nova composer and pianist Antonio Adolfo. Thursday's African Show hosted by David Ellenbogen will celebrate the music of Fela Kuti, the creator of AfroBeat and the ultimate rebel musician. Guests will include his son, musician Femi Kuti, and Academy Award winning director Alex Gibney, whose documentary, Finding Fela, opened in theaters on August 1.

Gustav Leonhardt Memorial Broadcast

This Friday, January 20th, WKCR will be devoting over eleven hours of programming to the music of Gustav Leonhardt (5/30/1928-1/16/2012). As a harpsichordist, organist, and conductor, Leonhardt was on the forefront of the movement in early music to revive period styles and practices. While best known for his recordings of J.S. Bach, Leonhardt made spectacular recordings of many different early music and Baroque composers. Tune in from 9:30am-9:00pm to hear WKCR's tribute to this legendary musician.
