Maid of Orleans on SNO

The performance history of Tchaikovsky's Maid Of Orleans is spotty at best. Initially rejected by Russian audiences as a mere derivative of Meyerbeer's grand operas, Tchaikovsky's opera struggled to find an audience in its early life; nevertheless, Tchaikovsky's early score has gained admirers in the years following, especially for its daunting title role that has attracted singers from Irina Arkhipova to Mirella Freni.

Ari Hoenig on the Musician's Show

Tune in Wednesday evening from 6-9 PM to hear this week’s edition of the Musician’s Show, where we will be joined by drummer, composer, and educator Ari Hoenig. Born in Philadelphia, Hoenig’s father was a conductor and classical singer, and his mother was a violinist and pianist. At age 4 Hoenig also began to study violin and piano and at age 12 began to study the drums. He attended the University of North Texas, studying with Ed Soph, but transferred to William Paterson University in 1995 to be closer to New York.

Handel's Saul on SNO

While Handel is best known for The Messiah and his Italian operas, his most inspired dramas are quite possibly his English oratorios. Dispensing Baroque operatic structures and cliches, these oratorios are extraordinarily varied and colorful masterpieces that require massive choral forces. Tune in to Saturday Night At The Opera to hear Saul, his epic detailing the Biblical king and his doom.

Tune in starting this Saturday, November 21, for a 30-hour broadcast of Coleman Hawkins' music in celebration of his 111th birthday anniversary! In addition to a full 24-hour preemption on his birthdate, November 21, we are extending the broadcast through 6am on Sunday, the 22nd, thereby preempting Saturday Night at the Opera and dedicating the normally scheduled Jazz 'Til Dawn program to the music of Coleman Hawkins.

Join us Tuesday, January 17 during our Out to Lunch programming from 1-2:30 pm EST for an interview with New York-based jazz pianist Emmet Cohen regarding his most recent project "Masters Legacy Series featuring Jimmy Cobb." Cohen began Suzuki method piano instruction at age three, and his playing quickly became a mature melding of musicality, technique, and concept. He placed first in both the American Jazz Pianists competition (2014) and the Phillips Piano Competition at the University of West Florida (2011).

Gustav Leonhardt Memorial Broadcast

This Friday, January 20th, WKCR will be devoting over eleven hours of programming to the music of Gustav Leonhardt (5/30/1928-1/16/2012). As a harpsichordist, organist, and conductor, Leonhardt was on the forefront of the movement in early music to revive period styles and practices. While best known for his recordings of J.S. Bach, Leonhardt made spectacular recordings of many different early music and Baroque composers. Tune in from 9:30am-9:00pm to hear WKCR's tribute to this legendary musician.
