Boito's "Mefistofele" & Benjamin's "Into The Little Hill"

The roles most likely associated with the bass voice are gods, kings, and especially demons. For this week's Saturday Night At The Opera, do not miss a special Halloween presentation of Arrigo Boito's Mefistofele. In the most colorful operatic adaptation of the Faust legend, Boito turns the devil himself into the tale's focus. Mefistofele requires a bass with true star power, as charismatic as he is threatening. Saturday's recording features Norman Treigle of New York City Opera fame in his signature role, with Placido Domingo and Montserrat Caballé as the doomed lovers.

Deep Focus on Monday 10/26's Jazz Alternatives

Ghost And Horror Stories This Week On Arts

In light of Halloween this Saturday, Arts will be programming scary stories all throughout the week on WKCR. Tune in (if you dare) Monday (10/26), Tuesday (10/27), and Thursday (10/29) at 9:30 p.m. and Sunday (11/01) at 9:00 p.m. to hear ghost and horror stories from H.G. Wells, H.P. Lovecraft, Edgar Allan Poe and other notoriously scary authors. Todd Nicholson on the Musician's Show

This week’s musician show will be hosted by Kat Whatley featuring bassist Todd Nicholson. In addition to being an active member of the New York downtown music scene, Nicholson is the Associate Director of the Arts for Art, the non-profit that organizes the Vision festival, and other year round free jazz focused programming. Having lived in Japan for a number of years, Nicholson also works with Japanese jazz and improvisatory musicians. Tune in to listen to live recordings of the Vision fest, and recordings of Japanese jazz musicians that inspire Nicholson’s music.

Founded in 1971 by Karl Berger, Ingrid Sertso and Ornette Coleman, the Woodstock-based CMS facilitates music innovation through workshops, master classes and performances, and provides opportunities for musicians to interact with the most important figures of improvisation and musical thought.

Join us Tuesday, January 17 during our Out to Lunch programming from 1-2:30 pm EST for an interview with New York-based jazz pianist Emmet Cohen regarding his most recent project "Masters Legacy Series featuring Jimmy Cobb." Cohen began Suzuki method piano instruction at age three, and his playing quickly became a mature melding of musicality, technique, and concept. He placed first in both the American Jazz Pianists competition (2014) and the Phillips Piano Competition at the University of West Florida (2011).

Aspen Matis on Studio A

Tune in to Studio A this Sunday, January 15, from 9:00 PM - 10:00 PM EST for an interview with internationally-bestselling memoirist Aspen Matis. Her book, Girl in the Woods, tells the story of her sexual assault and her flight from college, which led to a journey of self-discovery as she set out to hike the entire Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico to Canada.

George Wallington Celebration on Jazz Profiles

Sid Gribetz presents a five hour radio program celebrating the pianist and composer George Wallington on Jazz Profiles this Sunday, January 15 from 2:00 PM - 7:00 PM EST.
George Wallington was one of the legendary pianists of the bebop era but never achieved great fame. With his early retirement from a musical career, he remains a more obscure figure in jazz history and lore.

Gustav Leonhardt Memorial Broadcast

This Friday, January 20th, WKCR will be devoting over eleven hours of programming to the music of Gustav Leonhardt (5/30/1928-1/16/2012). As a harpsichordist, organist, and conductor, Leonhardt was on the forefront of the movement in early music to revive period styles and practices. While best known for his recordings of J.S. Bach, Leonhardt made spectacular recordings of many different early music and Baroque composers. Tune in from 9:30am-9:00pm to hear WKCR's tribute to this legendary musician.
