Nikolaus Harnoncourt Memorial Broadcast

Renowned conductor and pioneer of historically informed performance practice, Nikolaus Harnoncourt passed away on March 5th 2016 at the age of 86. WKCR Classical will be pre-empting all regular WKCR programming for a full 24 hours on Friday March 11th (12:00 AM to 11:59 PM) to devote our airwaves exclusively to a memorial broadcast in honor of Nikolaus Harnoncourt. The memorial broadcast will feature recordings of Harnoncourt as a conductor and cellist, interviews with Harnoncourt himself as well as with his colleagues.

Luca Pisaroni on Saturday Night at the Opera

Italian bass-baritone Luca Pisaroni has quickly established himself as one of the greatest Mozart singers of our time. At the Metropolitan Opera, he has become an audience favorite through his performances as Leporello, Figaro, and even the monstrous Caliban in The Enchanted Island. This month, Pisaroni returns to the Metropolitan Opera in Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro, this time as the lascivious Count Almaviva.

Ana-Maria Avram on Afternoon New Music

Tune in to Afternoon New Music at 3 pm on Tuesday, March 1st for an exclusive interview with Ana-Maria Avram. Born in Bucharest, Romania in 1961, composer Ana-Maria Avram’s propulsive music often synthesizes electroacoustic and instrumental sources. While informed by mathematical techniques, Avram is drawn to the dynamic nature of sound as independently shaped by each performer and listener. “Even if something is written, what is this, there on the score?” she asks. “A base from which to fly away.”

Britten's Rape of Lucretia on Saturday Night At The Opera

While the historical rape of Lucretia plays a central role in literature and religious theory, few composers have set this sequence to music. These settings take on the form of cantatas almost exclusively, which makes Benjamin Britten's opera an even more curious work. Narrated by a chorus that speaks with a contemporary viewpoint, they recount and attempt to find meaning in a heinous act. Tonight's broadcast features a live 2011 performance from the Aldeburgh Festival.

Join us Tuesday, January 17 during our Out to Lunch programming from 1-2:30 pm EST for an interview with New York-based jazz pianist Emmet Cohen regarding his most recent project "Masters Legacy Series featuring Jimmy Cobb." Cohen began Suzuki method piano instruction at age three, and his playing quickly became a mature melding of musicality, technique, and concept. He placed first in both the American Jazz Pianists competition (2014) and the Phillips Piano Competition at the University of West Florida (2011).

Gustav Leonhardt Memorial Broadcast

This Friday, January 20th, WKCR will be devoting over eleven hours of programming to the music of Gustav Leonhardt (5/30/1928-1/16/2012). As a harpsichordist, organist, and conductor, Leonhardt was on the forefront of the movement in early music to revive period styles and practices. While best known for his recordings of J.S. Bach, Leonhardt made spectacular recordings of many different early music and Baroque composers. Tune in from 9:30am-9:00pm to hear WKCR's tribute to this legendary musician.
