"Notes from Underground" showcases contemporary hip hop with an emphasis on emerging and experimental artists. The program is hosted by a variety of student programmers, each with their own eclectic taste in hip hop, so that its sound evolves alongside the genre. The program also hosts local and visiting artists for interviews, freestyles, and guest-curation. Tune in on Saturday nights from 12:30am-2am.
On Monday, September 23rd, WKCR will conduct its annual all-day tribute to John Coltrane on the 93rd anniversary of his birth. Born on September 23, 1926 in North Carolina, Coltrane is celebrated to this day for his innovative work on alto, tenor, and soprano saxophones, as well as his enormous contributions to the genres of bebop, hard bop, and free and avant-garde jazz. From the late 1940s to the mid-late 1950s, Coltrane collaborated with numerous jazz titans, performing as a sideman with the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, and Miles Davis, among others.
Tune in to Live Constructions at 10 pm on Sunday, September 22nd for an exclusive in-studio interview from composer/multi-instrumentalist Elliott Sharp. The hour-long program will cover Sharp's upcoming concert at Zürcher Gallery next Monday, September 30th, and his recently published memoir IrRational Music.

Join us this Wednesday on the Firing Lion from 9 to 10 pm for a discussion on the state of American soccer with Sunil Gulati. A senior lecturer of economics at Columbia University, Gulati has also served as President of the United States Soccer Federation and the FIFA Executive Committee.
Tune in from August 27th-29th when WKCR will be holding our annual Lester Young/Charlie Parker birthday broadcast celebration! On the 27th we’ll be playing just the music of Young, the 28th we’ll be playing a mix of the two, and on the 29th we’ll be playing the music of Parker.

Join us 6-9 pm this Wednesday as we host Sullivan Fortner on the Musician's Show! Lauded as one of the top jazz pianists of his generation, Sullivan Fortner is recognized for his virtuosic technique and captivating performances. The winner of three prestigious awards – a Leonore Annenberg Arts Fellowship, the 2015 Cole Porter Fellowship from the American Pianists Association, and the 2016 Lincoln Center Award for Emerging Artists – Sullivan’s music embodies the essence of the blues and jazz as he connects music of all eras and genres through his improvisation.
Tune in this Wednesday from 6pm to 1am to listen a Memorial Broadcast dedicated to João Gilberto. The show will encompass from his early and rare recordings before Bossa Nova to his most recent solo album released in 2004 along with relevant historical background. We will also feature exclusive WKCR interviews with important characters that were involved with João Gilberto such as the producer Creed Taylor, and one of the Tropicália artists Gilberto Gil.
