Duke Ellington Birthday Broadcast

Arguably the greatest composer that America has ever seen, Duke Ellington was born in 1899 in Washington D.C. In the early 1920's, Ellington ventured to New York where he would establish a long career as a bandleader, pianist, and prolific arranger and composer. Some famous jazz tunes written by Duke Ellington include "In a Sentimental Mood," "It Don't Mean a Thing if it Ain't Got That Swing," "Mood Indigo," and "Satin Doll." Ellington's career spanned sixty total years and led to the formation of some of the greatest big bands that jazz has ever seen.

Ella Fitzgerald Birthday Broadcast

Born in 1917 and raised primarily in Yonkers, New York and Harlem, Ella Fitzgerald rose to prominence as a jazz vocalist in Chick Webb's big band in the late 30's and early 40's. After Webb passed away in 1939, Fitzgerald assumed leadership of the band and toured and recorded with the group until 1942. In the 1940's, Fitzgerald helped to bring the bebop style to vocal jazz namely through what is known as scat singing.

Chaurasia's disciple Jay Gandhi joined the discussion, and he'll join us in studio to curate a playlist of some great performances from Hariprasad's prolific career.

A Celebration of Beethoven

On Friday, March 15, Teri Towe and Simon Cohen will present a day-long celebration of the music of Beethoven on WKCR in anticipation of his 250th birthday year in 2020.

From 9am to 6pm, the broadcast will feature a wide-ranging survey of genres and performances, from the earliest classic renditions to the most up-to-date period instrument performances.

Musician's Show - Ted Nash

Born in Los Angeles into a musical family (his father, Dick Nash, and uncle, the late Ted Nash, were both well-known jazz and studio musicians), Nash has that uncanny ability to mix freedom with substance, blues with intellect, and risk-taking with clarity. He is a co-founder of the New York-based Jazz Composers Collective, a musician-run, non-profit innovative entity dedicated to presenting the original works of composers pushing the boundaries of their self-expression. Nash is also a long-standing member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, with Wynton Marsalis.

Join us Tuesday, January 17 during our Out to Lunch programming from 1-2:30 pm EST for an interview with New York-based jazz pianist Emmet Cohen regarding his most recent project "Masters Legacy Series featuring Jimmy Cobb." Cohen began Suzuki method piano instruction at age three, and his playing quickly became a mature melding of musicality, technique, and concept. He placed first in both the American Jazz Pianists competition (2014) and the Phillips Piano Competition at the University of West Florida (2011).

Aspen Matis on Studio A

Sid Gribetz presents a five hour radio program celebrating the pianist and composer George Wallington on Jazz Profiles this Sunday, January 15 from 2:00 PM - 7:00 PM EST.
George Wallington was one of the legendary pianists of the bebop era but never achieved great fame. With his early retirement from a musical career, he remains a more obscure figure in jazz history and lore.

Gustav Leonhardt Memorial Broadcast

This Friday, January 20th, WKCR will be devoting over eleven hours of programming to the music of Gustav Leonhardt (5/30/1928-1/16/2012). As a harpsichordist, organist, and conductor, Leonhardt was on the forefront of the movement in early music to revive period styles and practices. While best known for his recordings of J.S. Bach, Leonhardt made spectacular recordings of many different early music and Baroque composers. Tune in from 9:30am-9:00pm to hear WKCR's tribute to this legendary musician.
