Thelonious Monk Birthday Broadcast

Tune in on Wednesday, October 10 to WKCR 89.9 FM-NY for 24 hours of Thelonious Sphere Monk’s music in celebration of the 101st day of his birth. Born in 1917 in North Carolina but raised in Manhattan, Monk first established his musicianship as a mostly self-taught travelling church organist. He marked his grand entrance into the New York jazz scene in 1941 as the new house pianist at the Minton’s Playhouse, the breeding grounds of bebop.

Sonidero Migrante Festival

WKCR’s Sonidero Migrante is a 3 day radio festival celebrating Latinx music, art and activism in NYC. WKCR’s Latin department will be taking over the airwaves on 89.9 FM-NY from noon to midnight on Friday October 12th through Sunday October 14th with an expansive line up of emerging Latinx musicians, artists and organizers.

Ragas Live Festival

From 5pm October 6th to 5pm October 7th, WKCR will preempt all regularly scheduled programming to broadcast the 7th annual Ragas Live Festival, a 24 hour/24 set broadcast of Indian Classical and raga-inspired music. Over 80 musicians will participate including Vijay Iyer, Brooklyn Raga Massive's Coltrane Raga Tribute and Adam Rudolph's Go:Organic Orchestra. A galvanizing event in the musical movement, the New York Times and New Yorker have called, "A Raga Renaissance," the festival reaches an international audience through our stream.

Miya Masaoka & James Ilgenfritz on Afternoon New Music

Tune in to Afternoon New Music at 3pm on Tuesday, September 25th for an exclusive in-studio interview and live set with composer Miya Masaoka and bassist James Ilgenfritz. Masaoka and Ilgenfritz will discuss their upcoming concert on Thursday, September 27th at Roulette. The concert will feature new compositions from Masaoka as part of Roulette's Interpretations series. Tuesday's Afternoon New Music program will also feature an in-studio live performance by Ilgenfritz of Masaoka's Four Moons of Pluto, as well as an exclusive ticket giveaway.

John Coltrane Birthday Broadcast

On Sunday, September 23rd, WKCR will conduct its annual all-day tribute to John Coltrane on the 88th anniversary of his birth. Born on September 23, 1926 in North Carolina, Coltrane is celebrated to this day for his innovative work on alto, tenor, and soprano saxophones, as well as his enormous contributions to the genres of bebop, hard bop, and free and avant-garde jazz.

Annual John Coltrane Birthday Broadcast

Tomorrow, September 23rd, WKCR will once again preempt all regular programming to celebrate the life and work of John Coltrane from 12:00am to 12:00pm. Join us for long-form listenings and discussions about Coltrane approached from the perspective of bibliography, genre-bending and genre-working, collaborations and experimentations, and even modern dance choreographed to Coltrane. Tune in, online or on the FM, for this historic birthday celebration as we meditate on Coltrane, "Time After Time".

Conversation on Refugee Family Separation

Emmet Cohen on Out to Lunch

Join us Tuesday, January 17 during our Out to Lunch programming from 1-2:30 pm EST for an interview with New York-based jazz pianist Emmet Cohen regarding his most recent project "Masters Legacy Series featuring Jimmy Cobb." Cohen began Suzuki method piano instruction at age three, and his playing quickly became a mature melding of musicality, technique, and concept. He placed first in both the American Jazz Pianists competition (2014) and the Phillips Piano Competition at the University of West Florida (2011).

Tune in to Studio A this Sunday, January 15, from 9:00 PM - 10:00 PM EST for an interview with internationally-bestselling memoirist Aspen Matis. George Wallington Celebration on Jazz Profiles

Sid Gribetz presents a five hour radio program celebrating the pianist and composer George Wallington on Jazz Profiles this Sunday, January 15 from 2:00 PM - 7:00 PM EST.
George Wallington was one of the legendary pianists of the bebop era but never achieved great fame. With his early retirement from a musical career, he remains a more obscure figure in jazz history and lore.

Gustav Leonhardt Memorial Broadcast

This Friday, January 20th, WKCR will be devoting over eleven hours of programming to the music of Gustav Leonhardt (5/30/1928-1/16/2012). As a harpsichordist, organist, and conductor, Leonhardt was on the forefront of the movement in early music to revive period styles and practices. While best known for his recordings of J.S. Bach, Leonhardt made spectacular recordings of many different early music and Baroque composers. Tune in from 9:30am-9:00pm to hear WKCR's tribute to this legendary musician.
