Jazz Profiles 3/12/2023: Richard “Groove” Holmes

Sid Gribetz presents a five hour radio broadcast celebrating the career of organist Richard “Groove” Holmes this Sunday, March 12, 2023, from 2-7 PM on “Jazz Profiles” on WKCR.

Groove Holmes was a giant among the generation of jazz organists who brought the Hammond B-3 sound to artistic prominence and popular appeal in the late 1950's and 1960's. Within that genre, Groove’s style was informed by an especially loping, easy going rhythm and toe-tapping grace that lent an element of joyful swing to his presentation of standards, funk, and the blues.

King’s Crown Country Jamboree 2023

WKCR’s Country Music Festival is back! After a hiatus, the newly-rebranded King’s Crown Country Jamboree runs this year during the weekend of February 25th and 26th, pre-empting all regular weekend programming for those 48 hours to explore all the different facets of country music. With themed shows for every 3 hour slot throughout the weekend, listeners will get to explore everything from Old Time and Honky Tonk to Gospel Country and Country en Español. Jazz Profiles 2/19/23: Buddy DeFranco

Sid Gribetz presents a five hour radio program celebrating the career of Buddy DeFranco Sunday February 19, 2023 from 2-7 PM on Jazz Profiles, WKCR.

DeFranco was one of the greats among the clarinet players in modern jazz. He possessed a cerebral sophistication and intelligence, which, together with his masterful facility and command of the instrument and great sense of swing, made him one of our jazz giants. His tone on the clarinet was always warm, woody, and welcoming.

Phil Schaap Memorial Broadcast 2023

Join us from February 2nd to the 3rd as we celebrate the life and work of our beloved departed colleague Phil Schaap with a 48 hour memorial broadcast in his honor. In a now annual tradition, we mark the date of Phil’s broadcasting debut with a tribute of various archival broadcasts, providing a small sampling of his large body of work. Archival programs that will be aired include shows not normally heard during the year, including interviews, episodes of Out to Lunch, festival shows, and much more. Emmet Cohen on Out to Lunch

Join us Tuesday, January 17 during our Out to Lunch programming from 1-2:30 pm EST for an interview with New York-based jazz pianist Emmet Cohen regarding his most recent project "Masters Legacy Series featuring Jimmy Cobb." Cohen began Suzuki method piano instruction at age three, and his playing quickly became a mature melding of musicality, technique, and concept. He placed first in both the American Jazz Pianists competition (2014) and the Phillips Piano Competition at the University of West Florida (2011).

Aspen Matis on Studio A

Tune in to Studio A this Sunday, January 15, from 9:00 PM - 10:00 PM EST for an interview with internationally-bestselling memoirist Aspen Matis. Her book, Girl in the Woods, tells the story of her sexual assault and her flight from college, which led to a journey of self-discovery as she set out to hike the entire Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico to Canada.

A brief account of her experiences appeared first in The New York Times' Modern Love column, and that subsequentally led to her inspiring and heart-wrenching memoir.

George Wallington was one of the legendary pianists of the bebop era but never achieved great fame. With his early retirement from a musical career, he remains a more obscure figure in jazz history and lore.

Gustav Leonhardt Memorial Broadcast

This Friday, January 20th, WKCR will be devoting over eleven hours of programming to the music of Gustav Leonhardt (5/30/1928-1/16/2012). As a harpsichordist, organist, and conductor, Leonhardt was on the forefront of the movement in early music to revive period styles and practices. While best known for his recordings of J.S. Bach, Leonhardt made spectacular recordings of many different early music and Baroque composers. Tune in from 9:30am-9:00pm to hear WKCR's tribute to this legendary musician.
