Raga Cubana on Rag Aur Taal

Last month, maestro Román Díaz brought a world class group of Afro-Cuban musicians to perform with the Brooklyn Raga Massive All-Stars during the artist collective's residency at Pioneer Works. We'll share the recording of that innovative concert, where, for the first time, sarod, bansuri and Carnatic violin dialogue with Afro-Cuban vocals and the sacred batá drumming tradition.

Danny Mekonnen of the Debo Band on In All Languages

Debo band explores the rich and varied traditions of Ethiopian music with a dose of funk, punk and soul. S.E.M. Ensemble on Afternoon New Music

Tune in for an interview featuring Roscoe Mitchell, Lucie Vítková, George Lewis and Alvin Singleton in anticipation of two S.E.M. Ensemble concerts that will mine the legacy of John Cage and Karlheinz Stockhausen, happening on May 9th at the Bohemian National Hall, NYC and May 11th at Roulette. The ensemble, conducted by Petr Kotik, will play world premiere's of compositions from Roscoe Mitchell, Petr Kotik and Lucie Vítková on Monday and will conclude the the "Darmstadt Institute New York 70th Anniversary" series on May 11.

Join us Tuesday, January 17 during our Out to Lunch programming from 1-2:30 pm EST for an interview with New York-based jazz pianist Emmet Cohen regarding his most recent project "Masters Legacy Series featuring Jimmy Cobb." Cohen began Suzuki method piano instruction at age three, and his playing quickly became a mature melding of musicality, technique, and concept. He placed first in both the American Jazz Pianists competition (2014) and the Phillips Piano Competition at the University of West Florida (2011).

Gustav Leonhardt Memorial Broadcast

This Friday, January 20th, WKCR will be devoting over eleven hours of programming to the music of Gustav Leonhardt (5/30/1928-1/16/2012). As a harpsichordist, organist, and conductor, Leonhardt was on the forefront of the movement in early music to revive period styles and practices. While best known for his recordings of J.S. Bach, Leonhardt made spectacular recordings of many different early music and Baroque composers. Tune in from 9:30am-9:00pm to hear WKCR's tribute to this legendary musician.
