Ampersan on Field Trip

Tune in to Field Trip from 11:00pm to 12:30am this Sunday, October 22nd for a WKCR in-studio 'field' experience. Ampersan, based in Guadalajara and later Mexico City, joined us at the WKCR studios for both a live set and an interview in Spanish. The band is celebrating their 10th year of music-making with the 2017 release of "10 Años".

Tim Armacost on the Musician's Show

Tune in to the Musician’s Show this Wednesday, October 18 from 6-9 PM ET for a live interview with saxophonist Tim Armacost. After landing in New York in 1993, Armacost quickly established his presence as a leader, releasing his first two albums, “Fire” (Concord) and “Live at Smalls” (Double Time) to critical acclaim. His hard hitting third release, “The Wishing Well,” (Double Time) announced the arrival of Armacost’s working unit, featuring Bruce Barth, Ray Drummond, and Billy Hart.

Moon Hooch on Afternoon New Music

Tune in to Afternoon New Music this Tuesday, October 17 at 5pm ET for an interview with avant garde jazz trio Moon Hooch. Moon Hooch has been hailed as "unhinged" and "irresistible" by NPR music. The group will speak with WKCR in the middle of a lengthy tour and prior to two nights at the Bowery Ballroom (10/18 and 10/19).

Malcolm Friend for Studio A

Muyassar Kurdi and Nicholas Jozwiak for Live Constructions

Tune in this Sunday from 10-11pm for a live studio performance with Muyassar Kurdi (vox) and collaborator Nicholas Jozwiak (cello). Kurdi is a multi-disciplinary artist whose work encompasses sound, extended vocal technique, performance art, movement, photography, and film. An improviser and composer, Kurdi has toured extensively in the US and in Europe and performs music for voice, harmonium, piano, lyre, autoharp, and theremin.

Anna Simone Reumert and Mira al-Rahim for Middle Eastern Influences

On tonight's Middle Eastern Influences, Anna Simone Reumert and Mira al-Rahim present “Syria: Art in a time of revolution, exile and war”. Reumert and al-Rahim have interviewed Abdallah al-Kafri (Beirut), Ali Atassi (Beirut), and Fadi Yazigi (Damascus) about their respective art-making in the context of present-day Syria. All recordings were done in Beirut, Lebanon this summer. "Syria: Art in a time of revolution, exile and war" will be available on Soundcloud after airing.

Emmet Cohen on Out to Lunch

Join us Tuesday, January 17 during our Out to Lunch programming from 1-2:30 pm EST for an interview with New York-based jazz pianist Emmet Cohen regarding his most recent project "Masters Legacy Series featuring Jimmy Cobb." Cohen began Suzuki method piano instruction at age three, and his playing quickly became a mature melding of musicality, technique, and concept. He placed first in both the American Jazz Pianists competition (2014) and the Phillips Piano Competition at the University of West Florida (2011).

Her book, Girl in the Woods, tells the story of her sexual assault and her flight from college, which led to a journey of self-discovery as she set out to hike the entire Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico to Canada.

George Wallington Celebration on Jazz Profiles

Sid Gribetz presents a five hour radio program celebrating the pianist and composer George Wallington on Jazz Profiles this Sunday, January 15 from 2:00 PM - 7:00 PM EST.
George Wallington was one of the legendary pianists of the bebop era but never achieved great fame. With his early retirement from a musical career, he remains a more obscure figure in jazz history and lore.

Gustav Leonhardt Memorial Broadcast

This Friday, January 20th, WKCR will be devoting over eleven hours of programming to the music of Gustav Leonhardt (5/30/1928-1/16/2012). As a harpsichordist, organist, and conductor, Leonhardt was on the forefront of the movement in early music to revive period styles and practices. While best known for his recordings of J.S. Bach, Leonhardt made spectacular recordings of many different early music and Baroque composers. Tune in from 9:30am-9:00pm to hear WKCR's tribute to this legendary musician.
