WKCR will celebrate what would have been the 103rd birthday of Sun Ra Monday, May 22 2017 from 2:00 AM-8:20 AM ET, during its Monday Mornings in Mono and Daybreak Express programs. Sun Ra (born Herman Poole Blount; May 22, 1914 - May 30, 1993) was an American jazz composer, bandleader, piano and synthesizer player, poet and philosopher known for his experimental music, “cosmic” philosophy, prolific output, and theatrical performances.

Cheryl earned an MFA in Poetry from Stonecoast: The University of Southern Maine, and an MSW from Fordham University. She is the author of three collections of poetry: Raw Air, Night When Moon Follows, and Convincing the Body.

Morgan Guerin for the Musician's Show

Growing up in a musical family, Morgan was given his first pair of drumsticks at the age of six months, followed shortly thereafter by a drum set. By six, Morgan had his first saxophone and his instrumental repertoire expanded to many more instruments. Having grown up in such a musical household, Morgan had the good fortune of being exposed to jazz from the Marsalis family, Donald Harrison, Christian Scott, among many others.

Makigami Koichi for Afternoon New Music

Tune in to Afternoon New Music on Wednesday, May 3 from 3:00-6:00 PM EST for a live interview and in-studio performance with the vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Makigami Koichi hosted by Seth Benjamin and Kat Whatley. Based in Japan, Makigami is a founding member of the experimental techno-pop group Hikashu, active since 1978. In addition, he tours widely and performs with both jazz and experimental musicians as well as folk musicians around the world. His music combines folk music traditions, particularly Japanese and Tuvan throat singing, with free improvisation and jazz.
