Sun Ra (born Herman Poole Blount; May 22, 1914 - May 30, 1993) was an American jazz composer, bandleader, piano and synthesizer player, poet and philosopher known for his experimental music, “cosmic” philosophy, prolific output, and theatrical performances.

Makigami Koichi for Afternoon New Music

Tune in to Afternoon New Music on Wednesday, May 3 from 3:00-6:00 PM EST for a live interview and in-studio performance with the vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Makigami Koichi hosted by Seth Benjamin and Kat Whatley. Based in Japan, Makigami is a founding member of the experimental techno-pop group Hikashu, active since 1978. In addition, he tours widely and performs with both jazz and experimental musicians as well as folk musicians around the world. His music combines folk music traditions, particularly Japanese and Tuvan throat singing, with free improvisation and jazz.
