Jazz Alternatives Mon 3/28: Mitch Goldman's Deep Focus on Sonny Rollins with guest Andy Caploe

There is no living artist in the Jazz firmament more revered than Sonny Rollins. He is admired for, among other things, eluding his audience's expectations of him. Never was this more true than on July 19, 1985 when he performed a set entirely unaccompanied in the Sculpture Garden at the Museum of Modern Art. Listening to this set, the listener gets to hear Sonny working the puzzles, rebuses, puns and equations that inform his best improvisations. It is as revealing as the glass and steel structure of the modern buildings that surrounded MoMA.

2021 Louis Armstrong Birthday Broadcast!

In his autobiography, Swing That Music, Louis Armstrong titled the first chapter “Jazz and I Get Born Together.” Dating his birthday July 4, 1900, Armstrong created a mythology that linked his own birth to the birth of Jazz and the birth of America. While he may have been mistaken about the exact date (most historians believe it's August 4th), he was not wrong to connect his life with the beginnings of this American art form. It is now believed that his actual birthday was on August 4th, so we celebrate both dates with an all-day broadcast of the great's music.
