WKCR announces a Lunar New Year Broadcast, this year combined with a Teresa Teng Birthday Broadcast, for 12-hours on FM and HD radio and online, from 12:00am to 12:00pm on Wednesday, January 29th. It will run from the last hour of Tuesday’s Just as Bad until the conclusion of Cereal Music. The broadcast will preempt all regularly-scheduled Wednesday programming within those hours.
On the first day of the lunisolar and lunar calendars, WKCR will celebrate the Year of the Snake by airing music from East and Southeast Asia, with each programmer choosing their tunes and genres within the wide theme of the broadcast. We at WKCR hope that the broadcast will bring a beautiful soundtrack to the beginning of the new year, with both traditional and experimental music playing throughout and programmers who are excited to take part. This year, a fantastic coincidence has led to a combined broadcast! Lunar New Year coincides with the birthday of Teresa Teng (Deng-Lijun), the iconic star and pioneer of modern Chinese pop music. Her influence and talent cannot be understated. A prolific, multilingual and versatile artist, she recorded over 1,700 songs in Mandarin, Hokkien, Cantonese, Shanghainese, Japanese, Indonesian, English, and Italian. Teng has profoundly impacted Chinese music, and pop music worldwide, since the beginning of her 30-year career. We are proud to celebrate her birthday along with the Lunar New Year by honoring her legacy and incorporating her music into the broadcast.
Happiest of new years to all who celebrate, with love from all of us at the station! Follow WKCR on Instagram (@wkcr) and Twitter (@WKCRFM) for further updates. Online listening is available 24/7 at wkcr.org via our web stream.
