Miller Theater Season Preview on Afternoon New Music

Die Soldaten on SNO

Any presentation of Bernd Alois Zimmermann's Die Soldaten is a monumental undertaking. To depict a terrifying vision of a world governed by war, the score requires a 100-piece orchestra, countless singers and speakers, an on-stage band, and electronic music throughout. Tibetan Music on In All Languages

This Sunday's In All Languages program will focus on exploring a variety of forms of Tibetan music, ranging from Buddhist ritual music, to opera, to contemporary recordings by Tibetan artists in exile. We will begin by listening to recordings of Buddhist rites performed by Tibetan monks in Bhutan, followed by a selection of other examples of Buddhist chants.

Carter Van Pelt's last show on Eastern Standard Time: Saturday August, 30th

WKCR is saddened to announce the departure of Eastern Standard Time regular host, Carter Van Pelt. Carter has been hosting the Saturday reggae show seven years ago and has been sharing every week his knowledge and love of the music for the pleasure of all of our listeners. He will be hosting his last show on Saturday, August 30th so tune in one last time to hear Carter Van Pelt on Eastern Standard Time!

All of WKCR staff wishes him the best of luck for his future endeavors and is confident that EST will continue on the path of high-quality set by Carter Van Pelt.

Chinese Classical Music on In All Languages

Tune in to this week IAL show as we will be looking at chinese classical music through several orchestral pieces. Chinese classical music draws its roots in the music played in royal courts using specific instruments such as the Yangquin or the Shen. Chinese classical music re-emerged in the 20th century after taking on the structure of the Western Orchestra. Most of the pieces evoque a story, often linked to folkolric legends or narrating major historical events.

John Zorn and Erik Friedlander on Afternoon New Music

Tune in at 3PM this Monday, August 25th, as we are joined by John Zorn and Erik Friedlander for our Afternoon New Music program. They will join us to speak about Zorn's upcoming week at the Village Vanguard, where he will be playing at the legendary venue for the first time. Zorn is a prolific composer and performer who has had a prolific and diverse career in jazz, classical, and avant-garde music. Zorn has been a friend of WKCR for many years, since making his first recordings at our studios in the late 70's, and we are glad to have him back to talk about his current projects. Listen!

Kane Mathis & Brandon Terzic on the African Show: Thursday, August 21st at 10PM

Tonight's African Show, hosted by David Ellenbogen will feature a live performance from the duo of Kane Mathis (on the 21-string Mandinka Harp) and Brandon Terzic (Ngoni )

Kane began taking trips to The Gambia, West Africa in 1997 and has continued rigorous study of the Mandinka Kora. Over the past ten years his performances have earned him recognition by the Gambian president, The Gambian minister of culture, and both national television and radio of The Gambia.

Join us Tuesday, January 17 during our Out to Lunch programming from 1-2:30 pm EST for an interview with New York-based jazz pianist Emmet Cohen regarding his most recent project "Masters Legacy Series featuring Jimmy Cobb." Cohen began Suzuki method piano instruction at age three, and his playing quickly became a mature melding of musicality, technique, and concept. He placed first in both the American Jazz Pianists competition (2014) and the Phillips Piano Competition at the University of West Florida (2011).

Sid Gribetz presents a five hour radio program celebrating the pianist and composer George Wallington on Jazz Profiles this Sunday, January 15 from 2:00 PM - 7:00 PM EST.
George Wallington was one of the legendary pianists of the bebop era but never achieved great fame. With his early retirement from a musical career, he remains a more obscure figure in jazz history and lore.

Gustav Leonhardt Memorial Broadcast

This Friday, January 20th, WKCR will be devoting over eleven hours of programming to the music of Gustav Leonhardt (5/30/1928-1/16/2012). As a harpsichordist, organist, and conductor, Leonhardt was on the forefront of the movement in early music to revive period styles and practices. While best known for his recordings of J.S. Bach, Leonhardt made spectacular recordings of many different early music and Baroque composers. Tune in from 9:30am-9:00pm to hear WKCR's tribute to this legendary musician.
