The first part of the program deals with Yue Opera from the region around Shanghai. The second part of the program is dedicated to the album "Rock and Roll on the New Long March," a 1989 album by Chinese Rock pioneer Cui Jian. The track "Nothing to My Name" became the unofficial anthem of the Tiananmen Square student protests. For a comparative perspective, I played several songs by the late-80s Soviet rock band Kino, who wrote similar allegorical protest songs as well.
