Symphony No. 7
Mutations from Bach
It's a brassy sort of day, perhaps. We heard Mahler's Symphony No. 7 in a recording from the late 1950's, to celebrate the composer's 154th birthday earlier this week. Bookended to that were American works for brass ensemble from Ives and Barber, the latter of which shares a common melodic ancestor with Bach's Cantata No. 23, which followed in Bach Hour.
