Helpful Hints & Tips

  • October is a busy time of year, so don't forget to check-in with your student about when they will have time to step away from the books and spend with family.

  • Please have a photo ID! Residence hall security requires that all guests (including parents/families) provide photo ID to enter the residences.

  • Your Family Days name badge is required for access to Alfred Lerner Hall and all Family Days event venues.

  • Check the weather. Dress casually and for comfort (and wear sensible shoes).

  • Refer to the Morningside Disability Access Map to help identify campus accessibility and contact Disability Services with any questions.

  • Taking pictures? Be sure to tag them with the #ColumbiaFamily hashtag.

  • Plan to explore NYC! Visit sites such as TimeOut NYC, NYCGo, TodayTix,  and TKTS for deals and discounted tours, festivals, museum admissions, and shows. Many theaters also offer same-day rush tickets. These services can help you to find the best prices for the widest possible variety of options. Talk with your student about what their schedule will be and whether there are particular things they would like to do and see with you.

  • For more information about Covid-19 and Columbia University guest policies, please refer to the Covid-19 Resource Guide for the Columbia Community. Masking is optional but recommended for indoor spaces. If you’re feeling sick or if you’ve tested positive for Covid-19, please delay or cancel your travel. We’d be happy to help with a refund.
