Family Orientation

Welcome, new parents and families!

In conjunction with Virtual Family Orientation, on-campus activities during Family Orientation are designed to help you get to know more about Columbia and the people who are here to support your student. First-year Families*

Lectures and workshops will take place on campus during first-year move-in on Sunday, August 30, and will conclude with Convocation, a ceremony to welcome you and your student into the Columbia family. This programming is not required, but we hope you will join us so we may introduce you to the people and resources with whom your student will work.

Columbia Urban Experience (CUE), August 25–30

CUE participants check in on Tuesday, August 25. Students will have access to their assigned residence hall during move-in and will sleep in the SIC House during CUE.

CUE concludes on Sunday, August 30 with an optional brunch for participants and their families.

Columbia Outdoor Orientation Program (COÖP), August 25–29

COÖP participants will check-in on Tuesday, August 25. After saying "farewell, for now" to your students, families of "COÖP-ers" will be invited to join us for a social event to meet other Columbia families and learn more about the COÖP experience. Light refreshments will be served.

Students will depart for COÖP on Wednesday, August 26 and return Saturday, August 29. Please keep in mind that students will not have access to cell phones until their return to campus, which may be late on Saturday evening.

International Student Orientation Program (ISOP), August 27–30

ISOP participants will check-in on Thursday, August 27. ISOP programming for families will take place Friday, August 28-Sunday, August 30.

NSOP 2020 check-in, Family Orientation and Convocation, Sunday, August 30*

Most first-year students will check-in for NSOP on Sunday, August 30. Family Orientation lectures and workshops are a great way to get to know the resources and people who are here for your student. Families who plan to arrive in the city early will be invited to join us in NYC for tours and cultural activities on Saturday, August 29.

Families of Transfer and Combined Plan Students*

The first day on campus can feel overwhelming, but we hope you can take some time to join us for the Transfer and Combined Plan Family Welcome on Tuesday, September 1. This event is a great opportunity to meet the people who will work closely with you and with your student, as well as to connect with other Columbia families.

*Student-athletes competing in fall sports will move in on their assigned report days, which they will receive from their coaches. Please ensure your student is monitoring their Columbia email address for the most up-to-date information.
