Family Orientation

Welcome, new parents and families!

Please read this page in its entirety when planning for your student's move to Columbia. To view program details, click the "+" sign next to its title.

First-year Families*

Family Orientation events will take place on campus concurrently with move-in. Read on for specific information regarding your student’s assigned check-in day* and corresponding events for our newest families. If your schedule allows, we hope you will attend workshops and lectures as well as Convocation, the event that officially welcomes your family to the Columbia community, on Sunday, August 26.

Please remind your student to check their Columbia email for the most up-to-date move-in information.

Columbia Urban Experience (CUE), August 19-26

CUE participants move in on Sunday, August 19 between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m at the Sundial on College Walk (116th street, between Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue). Your student will sleep in the Special Interest Community residence hall during CUE.

CUE concludes on Sunday, August 26 with a brunch for participants and their families. Brunch will take place from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.

Columbia Outdoor Orientation Program (COÖP), August 21-25

COÖP participants will check-in at 115th Street and Amsterdam Avenue on Tuesday, August 21 between 8:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Families of "COÖP-ers" are invited to join us from 3:30-4:30 p.m. for a social event to meet other Columbia families and learn more about the COÖP experience. Light refreshments will be served.

Students will depart for COÖP on Wednesday, August 22 and return Saturday, August 25. Please keep in mind that students will not have access to cell phones until their return to campus, which may be late on Saturday evening.

International Student Orientation Program (ISOP), August 23-26

ISOP participants will check-in on Butler Plaza Thursday, August 23 between 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Students who may arrive late should check-in at Hartley Hall.

ISOP programming for families will take place Friday, August 24-Sunday, August 26. Please see the schedules below for lectures and workshops.

NSOP check-in, Sunday, August 26

Most first-year students will check-in for NSOP on Sunday, August 26. Family Orientation lectures and workshops are a great way to get to know the resources and people who are here for your student. Please see the schedule below to plan your day.

Families of Transfer and Combined Plan Students*

Welcome to Columbia!

Incoming Transfer and Combined Plan students will move in on Tuesday, August 28. We will hold a welcome reception for students and their families from 1:00-2:00 p.m. Families will receive more information about this event in August.

*Student-athletes competing in fall sports will move in on their assigned report days, which they will receive from their coaches. Please ensure your student is monitoring their Columbia email address for the most up-to-date information.
