Wes Montgomery Centennial Broadcast

Wes Montgomery Centennial Broadcast
Monday, March 6, 2023 - 12:00am to 11:59pm

Happening all day Monday, March 6th, WKCR resumes its onslaught of jazz virtuosity with a 24-hour celebration of guitar legend Wes Montgomery on what would have been his 100th birthday. Montgomery was among the most acclaimed and influential jazz guitarist of the 20th century, known for his unique thumb-picking technique and intricate improvisational approach. Inspired by the jazz guitar revelations of Charlie Christian in the early 40's, Montgomery bought a guitar and taught himself to play, joining Lionel Hampton's band by the end of the decade and working the bebop circuit throughout the 1950's, recording extensively as a leader in the early 1960's, often with his brothers Buddy and Monk. WKCR's centennial broadcast will feature studio and love recordings from throughout his career, as well as special interviews discussing his influence and oeuvre.
