This Week in the American Department: Jamboree, Gullah Spirituals, and coal mining

Several special programs will highlight this week's American Department lineup. On Tuesday, July 19th at 10 PM, The Honky Tonkin' Jamboree brings two live acts to the WKCR studios: Margo Leverett and the Klezmer Mountain Boys and Honky Tonkin' house band Sheriff Uncle Bob and the Goodtimers. Then on Sunday, July 24th at 8 AM, Amazing Grace will feature the Gullah spiritual tradition of the South Carolina Sea Islands, including an interview recorded with David Smythe and Park Dougherty of the Society for the Preservation of Spirituals, a Charleston, SC based group aimed at preserving Gullah music that might otherwise be lost. Next, at 10 AM the Moonshine Show will explore the influence of coal mining on Appalachian culture and (of course) music. Be sure to tune in!
