Leo Smith (renamed Wadada in the 80s), is know for his ability to deftly balance structure and free improv, actualizing this tension on trumpet, flugelhorn, atenteben (Ghanian bamboo flute), koto, and kalimba. Via a diverse repertoire ranging from chamber-style composition to confrontational free jazz, Wadada shares a global musical perspective, challenges the limits for genre, suggests infinties of possibility for sound.
As a musician, educator, Guggenheim fellow, and Pulitzer finalist, Wadada has been active in the musical scene for more than half a century.
