Vince Guaraldi Holiday Special

Vince Guaraldi Special
Thursday, December 1, 2022 - 4:00pm to 9:00pm

WKCR announces a holiday special for American jazz pianist Vince Guaraldi, broadcast on FM and HD radio and online from 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm on Thursday, December 1, 2022. The broadcast will coincide with the tree-lighting ceremony at Columbia University.

Guaraldi is noted for his innovative compositions and arrangements, and for composing music for animated television adaptations of the Peanuts comic strip. His compositions for this series included their signature melody "Linus and Lucy" and the holiday standard "Christmas Time Is Here". He is also known for his performances on piano as a member of Cal Tjader's 1950s ensembles and for his own solo career. His 1962 composition "Cast Your Fate to the Wind" became a radio hit and won a Grammy Award in 1963 for Best Original Jazz Composition. Guaraldi tragically passed at age 47 in 1976 from a heart attack, just moments after concluding a nightclub performance in Menlo Park, California.

The special broadcast will feature WKCR Jazz Department Head, Melody Lu, programming live until 7:00 PM when Josh Kapilian will finish out the special. Follow WKCR on Instagram (@wkcr) and Twitter (@WKCRFM) for further updates. Online listening is available 24/7 at wkcr.org via our web stream
