Sharon Jones Memorial Broadcast

Sunday, November 20, 2016 - 8:00am to 12:00pm

Join WKCR on Sunday, November 20 from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM EST as we celebrate the life and work of funk and soul singer Sharon Jones (1956-2016). Jones, along with her longtime collaborators the Dap-Kings, did much to bring the sounds of funk and soul into the new millennium. One of New York’s own — Jones grew up in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn and would later move to Far Rockaway — Jones rose to prominence in 1996 after appearing on a session with funk legend Lee Fields. Jones and members of The Soul Providers and the Mighty Imperials formed Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings upon the creation of their label Daptone Records, and released their debut Dap Dippin’ with Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings in 2002.

Jones, who was known for her powerful voice, stage presence, and incredible energy — often introduced by the Dap-Kings as “110 pounds of soul excitement” — will be dearly missed. Tune in to WKCR as we remember Jones with four uninterrupted hours of her music and collaborations.
