Beginning Saturday, June 11th and continuing the two succeeding Saturdays, the Saturday Night at the Opera broadcasts (9 PM Sat. – 1 AM Sun.) will feature Philip Glass’ portrait-opera-trilogy: Einstein on the Beach (1976), Satyagraha (1980), and Akhnaten (1984). Over the past half-century, Philip Glass has served the classical music community (and music in general) as an innovative architect of “music with repetitive structures,” developing a large following along the way. A student of philosophy and mathematics, Darius Milhaud and Nadia Boulanger, Glass brings his characteristic cerebral playfulness and harmonic curiosity to the lives of Albert Einstein, Mahatma Gandhi, and (ancient Egyptian pharaoh) Akhenaton.
