WKCR is deeply saddened by the passing of the legendary jazz guitarist Russell Malone, who passed away yesterday. Malone was not only a brilliant musician but also a warm, generous soul who played a vital role in the New York jazz community. Known for his heartfelt playing, lightning-fast technique, and deep connection to the blues, he was also a mentor to many young musicians. His presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him and hearing his music.
In recognition of his extraordinary contributions to the tradition of jazz guitar and his significant impact on New York's vibrant music scene, WKCR will host a special tribute to celebrate Russell Malone's life and career. Beginning tomorrow, Sunday August 25th at 12pm and going till 9pm, the station will feature a series of broadcasts showcasing Russell’s work, from his early collaborations with the likes of Harry Connick Jr. and Diana Krall, to his work with Roy Hargrove and Benny Green in the late nineties and early 2000s, to his role in the Ron Carter Trio over the past 2 decades, and of course his solo releases over the past 3 decades will be extensively featured.
Through this tribute, WKCR aims to honor not only Malone's musical contributions but also his unique spirit that made him such a cherished figure in our community. WKCR invites everyone to join in celebrating the life of Russell Malone and to share their own stories and memories as part of this special broadcast.
