WKCR is delighted to announce a unique 24-hour broadcast to celebrate the life and work of pioneering music historian, feminist, and record-label head Rosetta Reitz. This broadcast will truly be one of a kind, including both the entire catalog of Rosetta Records—a label founded by Rosetta Reitz that released often sidelined or underappreciated music of early women of the Blues and Jazz—and special interviews, recordings, and finds from the WKCR library and other archival collections. WKCR will air all nineteen releases by Rosetta Records in full, treating listeners to those rare recordings of artists such as Ma Rainey, Valaida Snow, Ida Cox, Dinah Washington, and Mae West. But we will also go beyond the recordings released by Rosetta Records to showcase the music of other early women Jazz and Blues pioneers––artists whom Rosetta loved but did not get the chance to feature. We will also celebrate Rosetta’s other contributions to the music world, such as her writing and criticism (she wrote detailed liner notes for every Rosetta Records LP). WKCR promises a segment devoted to rare 78s, unreleased audio of a live concert organized by Rosetta, and interviews with people close to Rosetta or experts in her life and work. Come celebrate with us this incredible pioneer of the early Jazz and Blues, as well as the music of those that she championed.
