Ronald Shannon Jackson Memorial Broadcast

On Monday, October 21st, from 3pm until 9:30am on Tuesday, October 22nd, WKCR will honor the life and music of the late drummer Ronald Shannon Jackson. Born on January 12th, 1940 in Fort Worth, Texas, Ronald Shannon Jackson was a major pioneer of Free Jazz, Free Funk, and Jazz Fusion. He contributed significantly as a sideman and leader in the three generes and was one of only two musicians to have played with the three great pioneers of Free Jazz: Ornette Coleman, Cecil Taylor, and Albert Ayler. A composer and leader in his own right he created the free funk band Decoding Society in 1979. Be sure to stay tuned in the coming weeks as we further honor his legacy.
