Rez Abbasi on the Musician's Show

Tune in Wednesday evening from 6-9 PM to hear this week's edition of the Musician's Show, where we will be joined by guitarist Rez Abbasi. Born in Pakistan, Abbasi moved to Southern California at the age of four with his family. He studied jazz and classical music at the University of Southern California and Manhattan School of Music and Indian classical music with tabla virtuoso, Ustad Alha Rahka, accompanist to Ravi Shankar and father of Zakir Hussain. He has lived in New York for the past twenty years and has recorded or performed with Grammy winner Ruth Brown, Peter Erskine, Kenny Werner, Barre Phillips, Tim Berne, Marc Johnson, Billy Hart, Gary Thomas, Dave Douglas, Mike Clark, Tony Malaby, George Brooks, Ronu Majumdar, Kadri Gopalnath, Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, Marilyn Crispell, Greg Osby, Howard Levy, and many others. Abbasi was an integral member of Rudresh Mahanthappa’s Indo-Pak Coalition (Innova) and Kinsmen Ensemble (PI), the latter of which produced the highly acclaimed album Kinsmen (2008). He has recorded ten albums of his own, including Snake Charmer (2005) and Baazar (2007), predominantly featuring original compositions, and has a new one soon to be released.
