Join us from February 2nd to the 3rd as we celebrate the life and work of our beloved departed colleague Phil Schaap with a 48 hour memorial broadcast in his honor. In a now annual tradition, we mark the date of Phil’s broadcasting debut with a tribute of various archival broadcasts, providing a small sampling of his large body of work. Archival programs that will be aired include shows not normally heard during the year, including interviews, episodes of Out to Lunch, festival shows, and much more. THURSDAY 2/2

12:00 AM: Billie Holiday Centennial: The Genius of Lady Day, originally broadcast on 4/8/2015. On the second day of this special edition of the Billie Holiday Birthday Broadcast, Phil provides an extended examination of the genius of Lady Day.

6:00 AM: Bird Flight originally broadcast on 11/27/2007. Part one of a seven part series focussed on Charlie Parker and Max Roach.

7:15 AM: Bird Flight originally broadcast on 11/29/2007. Part two of a seven part series focussed on Charlie Parker and Max Roach.

8:25 AM: Bird Flight originally broadcast on 11/30/2007. Part three of a seven part series focussed on Charlie Parker and Max Roach.

9:40 AM: Bird Flight originally broadcast on 12/03/2007. Part four of a seven part series focussed on Charlie Parker and Max Roach.

11:00 AM: Phil Schaap interviews Max Roach on Dizzy Gillespie, originally broadcast 5/20/1987. As part of the Dizzy Gillespie Festival, Max Roach recalls his involvement playing drums in the early days of BeBop.

12:10 PM: Doc Cheatham Centennial Broadcast, originally broadcast 6/13/2005.

4:00 PM: Phil Schaap and Jimmy Knepper discuss Bird, originally broadcast 8/30/1989. Phil chats with trombonist Jimmy Knepper about the music of Charlie Parker on this vintage broadcast of Jazz alternatives.

6:00 PM: Jazz Alternatives: Sharif Abdus-Salaam Interviews Phil Schaap, originally broadcast 2/4/2016. WKCR stalwart Sharif Abdus-Salaam interviews Phil on his show on Phil's 46th anniversary at the station, featuring music by Roy Eldridge and Charlie Parker.

9:00 PM: Out To Lunch: The Chocolate Dandies And The Strange Career Of Jim Crow, originally broadcast 5/8/2017. Phil explores the complex history of the recordings issued under the group heading of the "Chocolate Dandies."

FRIDAY 2/3

12:20 AM: Out To Lunch: Jabbo Smith 106th Birthday Broadcast, originally broadcast 12/22/2014. On this edition of the annual Jabbo Smith Birthday Broadcast, Phil showcases the Rhythm Aces and other recordings from the late 1920s.

3:20 AM: Out to Lunch: Swing Records, the First Jazz Label, originally broadcast 9/28/2015. Phil presents a show on the first record label dedicated exclusively to Jazz music, the French "Disques Swing" and its recordings.

6:30 AM: Bird Flight originally broadcast on 12/04/2007. Part five of a seven part series focussed on Charlie Parker and Max Roach.

7:35 AM: Bird Flight originally broadcast on 12/05/2007. Part six of a seven part series focussed on Charlie Parker and Max Roach.

8:45 AM: Bird Flight originally broadcast on 12/06/2007. Part seven of a seven part series focussed on Charlie Parker and Max Roach.

10:00 AM: Bird Flight: Phil Schaap's 40th Anniversary WKCR Broadcast, originally broadcast 2/2/2010.

11:20 AM: Eddie Durham Interviewed on Bennie Moten, originally broadcast 1/10/1981. Phil interviews Eddie Durham on his days in the Bennie Moten Orchestra and Eddie provides aural identification of the soloists on his first recordings with the band.

12:20 PM: Traditions In Swing: Original Audio Documents To The Emergence Of Jazz, originally broadcast 5/11/2013. Part one of three in a series on the audio documents surrounding the emergence of Jazz and early commercial recordings, before the explosion of Jazz records in 1923.

3:50 PM: Phil Schaap is interviewed on Jo Jones, originally broadcast 10/6/2011. Conducted by Sharif Abdus-Salaam, Anabel Anderson, Kevin Crowley, and Leena Mahan

6:30 PM: Jo Jones 100th Birthday Broadcast, originally broadcast 10/22/2011. Jones’s centennial was 10/7/2011, and Phil recorded three episodes of Traditions in Swing to commemorate the occasion. This episode focuses on Jo Jones with Count Basie from 1940 to 1947.

9:35 PM: Out To Lunch: Charles Mingus Spoken Word With Music, originally broadcast 7/17/2017. Phil explores Charles Mingus' efforts at combining the spoken word with Jazz music.
