Other than his gargantuan Carmina Burana, German composer Carl Orff is practically forgotten. Yet his contributions to opera were enormous. Tune in to Saturday Night At The Opera to hear his opera Oedipus der Tyrann. With text by Friedrich Hölderlin, Oedipus presents the tragedy as an austere amalgam of opera, theater, and ritual. Ferdinand Leitner conducts an all-star cast (Gerhard Stolze, Fritz Wunderlich, and Astrid Varnay) in this 1959 recording. Stepan Atamian hosts.
