Mozart's operas are performed with the frequency of almost no other opera composer, yet nearly all his popular operas today premiered in the last ten years of his life. Tune in to Saturday Night at the Opera on January 16th to hear his fifth opera Mitridate, re di Ponto. Composed when Mozart was just fourteen, Mitridate pits a royal family against each other in a fight for the crown. Though old-fashioned, Mozart's score is one of his most exciting and places extraordinary demands on its principals, with each aria a greater tour de force than the previous. Christophe Rousset conducts Les Talens Lyriques and a cast that includes Natalie Dessay, Cecilia Bartoli, and Giuseppe Sabbatini in the title role. Stepan Atamian hosts.
