WKCR announces a special broadcast celebrating the (alleged) 122nd birthday of American trumpeter Louis Armstrong, broadcast on FM and HD radio and online for 24 hours on Tuesday July 4th, 2023. The broadcast will preempt all regularly-scheduled Tuesday shows.

Born on August 4, 1921, in New Orleans, Louisiana, Louis Armstrong was a true pioneer and icon of jazz. Revered as one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century, Armstrong's contributions to the genre are immeasurable. From his early days playing in the jazz bands of New Orleans to his groundbreaking recordings as a bandleader and solo artist, Armstrong's trumpet playing and distinctive vocal style became synonymous with jazz itself. Known for his powerful, emotive trumpet solos and his gravelly yet melodic singing voice, he brought a unique energy and charisma to every performance. Throughout his career, Armstrong collaborated with numerous jazz legends and left an indelible mark on popular music. From his timeless recordings of songs like "What a Wonderful World" to his groundbreaking albums with his Hot Five and Hot Seven bands, Armstrong's influence can still be felt in every corner of the jazz world.

WKCR celebrates Louis Armstrong twice a year, on August 4th (his real birthday), and one month before, on July 4th, which is the date he insisted was his birthday, and the day in which he always celebrated. Tune in to WKCR during your fourth of July festivities to honor and enjoy the music of the late, great icon, Louis Armstrong.
