WKCR is excited to announce a special 24-hour birthday celebration for Antônio Carlos Jobim, broadcast on FM and HD radio and online all day on Saturday, January 25, 2025 in celebration of his 98th birthday. The special broadcast will run from the middle of Mambo Machine until the end half of Saturday at the Opera at 12:00 am on Sunday.

Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1927, Antônio Carlos Jobim gained significant recognition at a national level in 1959 when he collaborated with Vinicius de Moraes to compose the score for the film Orfeu Negro (Black Orpheus), which would go on to win the Palme d’Or at Cannes. The Jobim-de Moraes partnership became one of the most successful in the world, both critically and commercially, with the release of such songs as “Chega de Saudade,” “Garota de Ipanema,” and “So Tinha de Ser Com Você.” Jobim’s Grammy-award winning album with Stan Getz, Getz/Gilberto, confirmed his talent for composition and collaboration at an international level. Jobim also worked with Elis Regina, Sérgio Mendes, Astrud Gilberto, Ella Fitzgerald, and Frank Sinatra, among others. Jobim was in the process of finishing his final album, Antônio Brasileiro, when he passed away on December 8th 1994.

Jobim is widely recognized worldwide as one of the most influential composers of the 20th Century. As a pioneer in Brazilian music, Jobim must be celebrated for his influence as a songwriter and arranger in the transformation of the form "samba" and the creation of the bossa nova movement throughout Brazil, the United States, and the world. Our broadcast will feature special guests, interviews, and live performances, produced and hosted by Jassvan de Lima.
