Colombian novelist, short-story writer, and journalist Gabriel García Márquez passed away on April 17th in Mexico City. On tonight's program, we will feature music inspired by One Hundred Years of Solitude, and Chronicle of a Death Foretold. Gabo once described his Nobel Literature Prize-winning novel One Hundred Years as a 400 page vallenato, which was one of his favorite musics. When he accepted the Nobel Prize in Stockholm on December 10th, 1982, Gabo was surrounded by vallenato and traditional music icons- Rafael Escalona, Los Hermanos Zuleta, Pablo López, anthropologist Gloria Triana, and Consuelo Araujonoguera. Escalona and Araujonoguera were part of the trio (with Alfonso López Michelsen) that founded the annual Festival de La Leyenda Vallenata in 1968.
