Booker Little Memorial pt. 4: Booker Little's recordings from 4/13/60 to 12/21/60. We heard Little's second leader record (4/13 and 4/15/60); the Teddy Charles Jazz in the Garden concert at MoMA (8/25/60); most of Max Roach/Abbey Lincoln's Freedom Now Suite (8/31 and 9/6/60); and a "hidden morsel," one tune from Pat Thomas' fall 1960 record "Jazz Patterns," which featured an uncredited Booker Little solo; a selection from the studio date commemorating the summer 1960 Newport Rebels concert, the selection is a Booker Little composition and features both Max Roach and Jo Jones; we closed with a preview of next week's show, Eric Dolphy's Far Cry! which Dolphy recorded on the same day as Ornette Coleman's Free Jazz.
This show marks the beginning of Booker Little's work as a profound jazz composer, and the genesis of his musical partnership with Eric Dolphy. Tune in next week for more Dolphy, Abbey Lincoln, and Out Front.
