Michaels has developed a cottage industry in her local town of Taos, New Mexico, which produces her clothing according to ethical business practices. She was also a contestant on the 11th season of Project Runway. She emphasizes the importance of film and video to expand the visibility for her work.

In addition to the coverage of speeches given by indigenous activists who had been at Standing Rock and filmmaker John Fox, our reporter followed the march as it moved from Trump Hotel to Trump Tower, and the interactions the protestors had with police.

Tune in to Afternoon New Music on February 8 from 3:00 to 6:00 PM for an interview with New York percussionist and composer William Hooker, who has performed as a leader of various ensembles of improvised and new music. Hooker will discuss his ARIA project, a tribute to Italian folk music.

Tune in to Arts and Answers on Monday, February 6 at 9:30 PM EST for an interview with Dan Hoyle. Hoyle is a solo-show performer, actor, writer, and current artist-in-residence at the Heyman Center for the Humanities at Columbia University. His show, The Real Americans, was created in 2009 as a work of journalistic theater that chronicled the lives of people living in rural, conservative, small town United States. This past summer, Hoyle did an update of the show on the cusp of Trump's election.

Tune in all day Wednesday, January 25, for WKCR's 19th Tom Jobim birthday broadcast in celebration of his 90th anniversary. Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1927, Antônio Carlos Jobim gained major recognition at a national level in 1959 when he collaborated with poet Vinicius de Moraes to compose the score for the movie Orfeu Negro (Black Orpheus), which would go on to win the Palme d'Or at Cannes.

Born to a Mexican mother and Jewish father, Rosebud Ben-Oni is a recipient of the 2014 NYFA Fellowship in Poetry and a CantoMundo Fellow. She was a Rackham Merit Fellow at the University of Michigan, and a Horace Goldsmith Scholar at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Allen-a pianist/composer, bandleader, educator and Guggenheim Fellow-is the first recipient of the Soul Train, Lady of Soul Award for Jazz. In 2011, Geri Allen was nominated for an NAACP Award for her Timeline, Tap Quartet Project. Allen is the first woman, and youngest person to receive the Danish Jazz Par Prize.

Tune in Monday, January 23 at 3:00 PM to Afternoon New Music for a live performance and interview with percussionist, composer, and improviser Sean Hamilton on live electronics and drums. Notably, Hamilton has performed as an artist-in-residence with Leeds Improvised Music and Experimentation and was a featured performer at the Anxious Sound Series in New Orleans, Louisiana. His music focuses on electroacoustics, experimentation, and free improvisation.

Join WKCR this Monday, January 30th as we celebrate the 106th birthday anniversary of one of the foundational figures of the Swing Era, jazz trumpeter Roy “Little Jazz” Eldridge. Known for his signature boldness in rhythm and sound, Eldridge is often credited for his role in bridging the musical styles and approaches of Louis Armstrong and Dizzy Gillespie. Eldridge is often characterized by his use of tritone substitutions and virtuosic solos. Born in 1911 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Eldridge spent the early years of his career touring with a number of dance bands.

Tune in to Arts and Answers on Thursday, January 20 from 9:30 - 10:00 PM for an interview with the illustrious poet Ron Padgett, who wrote the poetry for the 2016 drama film, Paterson. Directed by Jim Jarmusch and starring Adam Driver, Paterson screened in October at the 54th New York Film Festival and is playing in theaters now.
