Randy Weston Memorial Broadcast

Sunday, September 2, 2018 - 2:00am to Monday, September 3, 2018 - 9:00pm
Join us as we honor the life, the genius, and the work of Randy Weston, who passed away Saturday, September 1st, at the age of 92 in Brooklyn.
Weston was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. Drawing influences from pianists such as Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk, Weston was a true innovator and visionary, encompassing the vast rhythmic heritage of Africa. Groundbreaking albums like “Uhuru Afrika” (Swahili for “Freedom Africa”) and “The Splendid Master Gnawa Musicians of Morocco,” not only mark Weston’s important impact on jazz music but also his desire to emphasize the African roots of jazz.
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the Randy Weston Memorial Broadcast. The Broadcast will begin with Monday Mornings in Mono at 2:00 AM and continue through Tuesday Jazz Alternatives until 9:00 PM. All jazz programming will be preempted during this time.
